Please note the changes that have taken place in this program for the 2012-2013 school year:
1. The title of the course is now Advanced First Aid. Becoming a state certified EMT is not a requirement or guarantee for students scheduled for this course. Only those students who complete the course in its entirety will be eligible to participate in the certification examinations if they choose. Possible testing dates are listed on the attached course schedule.
2. The AHA-CPR-HCP course will be taught according to the newly revised 2011 curriculum as set forth by the American Heart Association. All students must attend a class in which they are taught these new guidelines regardless of prior CPR certification.
3. The curriculum of this course is based on the newly revised Pennsylvania EMT-B protocols. Changes to the protocols took effect in July of 2011 and all students participating in this course will learn the content of these new guidelines.
4. Students will have two differentiated grades for this course.
a. The first is based only on chapter test and skills reviews and is a requirement of the state of Pennsylvania. This score must be a 70% at minimum for successful completion of the course.
b. The second is the grade that will appear on their report card and their official Carmichaels transcripts. This grade will include all tests, quizzes, homework, class participation, and extra credit.
5. The hour requirement for this course only applies to those students who are seeking state certification. Students’ class attendance is based on hours that they are IN THE CLASS and NOT hours in which they were in the school. If the student is participating in a school sponsored activity they will be allowed to make up course work as outlined in Carmichaels Area School District Policy. This make up work will count towards their district grade; it will NOT count as making up instructional hours for the state. THERE IS NO WAY TO MAKE UP INSTRUCTONAL TIME.
6. The majority of course instruction will take place during the regularly scheduled school day with a few topics being addressed after hours or on weekends. The components of the class that take place beyond the school day are open to all students but only a requirement for those who are seeking certification. These include:
a. AHA-CPR-HCP
b. OBGYN/Labor and delivery practical
c. Medical module exit exams- (The student is responsible for scheduling this with the instructor)
d. Gaining access (extrication) lecture
e. Gaining access (extrication) practical
f. Trauma exit exams- (The student is responsible for scheduling this with the instructor
g. Ambulance operations practical (optional for all students)
7. The practical portion of this year’s examination will meet the standards for National Registry certification; however, students wishing to obtain national registry certification must schedule a testing date with EMSI to participate in an additional written examination.
8. As a result of the new testing policy students will be required to fulfill all skills requirements as laid out by the PA-DOH prior to participating in state examinations.
Course Overview:
This course addresses the standards of emergency medical technician training as per the United States Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum for EMT- Basic (Revised in 1994). The Course provides the fundamentals in prehospital emergency medical service care. Furthermore, it aligns with the Pennsylvania State Basic Life Support Protocols (updated in 2012). Subjects that will be covered in this course include but are not limited to:
· CPR
· Lifting and moving patients
· Human anatomy/physiology
· Medical terminology
· Communications and documentation
· Airway management
· Shock
· Patient assessment
· Pharmacology
· Assisted medication administration
· Traumatic incidents/injuries
· Geriatrics
· Infants/children
· Behavioral/ psychological emergencies
· OBGYN/ Child Birth
· Vehicle Extrication
Note: As a portion of this courses curriculum, the students will participate in practical skills sessions which will involve strenuous physical activity as well as physical contact between students.
Course Format:
· Students will receive 30 minutes of daily lecture instruction as a full class during the PSSA PREP period
o If the student misses this instruction due to an excused absence, sporting event, or other school related activity, the student is responsible for making up course material on his/her own; however these absences will count against their allotted attendance hours.
o If the student misses the day of an examination they will be expected to make up the examination the day he or she returns to class
o If the student misses class due to an unexcused absence he or she will be issued a zero on all assignments given that day
o Students are reminded that material covered during school hours is part of the 140 hours of mandatory instruction; an abundance of absences can be detrimental to their progress in the course and ultimately make them ineligible for the state examination.
· Students will receive an additional 43 minutes of full class instruction each day during 4th period which will include much of the course practicum
o Student participation in practical sessions will be included as part of their 9 week and overall grade
o Students must also prove competency in practical content areas by successfully completing an exit examination for both the medical and trauma modules (see schedule for tentative dates).
o Due to subject content, absence during some practical sessions will result in the student being ineligible for the state exam (see attached schedule for tentative dates). These include:
§ AHA CPR for HCP
§ OBGYN and child birth
§ Vehicle extrication or alternative assignment
· Due to the nature of some practical sessions, they will be held after school hours or on Saturdays. Students are mandated to attend these classes.
o If the student has a doctor’s excuse for:
§ AHA-CPR-HCP - the student must find another class in which to receive the necessary certification and submit proper paper work to the instructor
§ Vehicle extrication- the student must complete an alternative assignment which will fulfill the hour and concept requirements for this course.
NOTE: with concern for student safety, no student will be permitted to complete the practical session of vehicle extrication without being present for the lecture portion.
§ OBGYN/Labor and Delivery- - the student must complete an alternative assignment which will fulfill the hour and concept requirements for this course.
· At the beginning of the course the students will be asked to choose a classmate that will be their partner throughout the duration of the course.
o It is highly recommended that the student choose someone they can get along with and that they perceive as being reliable and easy to communicate with
o Please choose a partner that is as equally dedicated to completion of the course as yourself.
o It is preferred that in the situation of split practical groups (as noted above) that partners remain in the same group so they can practice working with each other
o 2 portions (Trauma and CPR) of the state practical exam will be completed with this partner
o Be advised, they will be evaluated as a group. If one fails, they both fail

· Students are required by the state to maintain a minimum 70% average throughout the duration of the course to be eligible for final examination testing.
· Once students have completed all course work sufficiently, they will be eligible to take the Pennsylvania State EMT-B Examination, which is administered by the Emergency Medical Services Institute of Pittsburgh. This examination consists of 2 portions:
o A practical examination where the students will be judged on their skill performance by state evaluators in the areas of traumatic injury, medical assessment/ assisted medications, and CPR/ airway management. Students must pass a practical, skill-based assessment prior to taking the written portion of the examination.
o A 100 question, multiple choice written examination that encompasses all subject matter included in their text. A minimum grade of 70% is required to obtain a Pennsylvania State EMT-B certification.
· Participation in state examinations is voluntary and only the students who have completed all required aspects of this course will be eligible.
· Students who do not participate in state testing will receive a course grade based on the work they complete throughout the school year. Failure to participate in state testing will NOT have a negative impact on their final grade at Carmichaels.
State Testing Policy:
o Although it is recommended that students who seek certification test with their classmates it is NOT a requirement.
o Any student who completes the course in its entirety will have their information sent to the Emergency Medical Services Institute and will remain on record for one calendar year.
o Upon completion of the course, the student will have one calendar year to successfully complete both aspects of the state examination to gain certification.
o Students who are unable to attend on the scheduled test days will be able to make up the exams by scheduling it with EMSI.
o Students who participate in the exams but do not pass will have one calendar year to retake the portion of the exams as many times as they wish.
o After one calendar year the students who successfully completed the course will be mandated to attend a 48 hour refresher course prior to taking the exams which they will be required to schedule on their own.
o Any student who does not complete all aspects of this class must schedule and retake an entire course before being eligible for certification.
o Any student who will require special assistance during state examination must meet with the instructor prior to the first week of class to ensure proper modifications of course material.
o In the event of unforeseen physical/mental/emotional disability during the state examination testing, students who are unable to perform adequately will be scheduled to test when their condition improves within one year of course completion.
