The growth of employment between 2005 and 2013 could not keep pace with the number of new entrants to the labour market and the strict unemployment rate increased from 19.2 percent to 24.9 percent during this period.

In order for you not to become one of the unemployment statistics in our country, read extract and answer the following questions:

The integration of youth into working life recently became an important policy issue in most countries. Worldwide, the transformation of work and employment has weakened the prospects of a steady, secure job, even for the most educated youngsters. A high level of youth unemployment is one of the manifestations of this phenomenon. The adjustment process to globalization requires young people to develop new skills and the ability to receive, on a lifelong basis, further training to cope with future, unpredictable, labour market changes. For many, it also means more vulnerability. The increasing difficulties met by young people to enter the labour market have led governments to pay particular attention to school-to-work transition.

1.1How would you explain the link between unemployment, crime and lack of self-esteem?

1.2.1 List four possible solutions you would consider to counteract unemployment.

1.2.2 Critically discuss how each solution listed in 1.2.1 will make you more employable and the influence it will have on your character and growth.

1.3 Recommend three ways in which the government can assist young people to be absorbed into the labour market or that will assist them to start their own businesses.
