CARE 91 PLARStudent Portfolio

To achieve the learning outcomes for the CARE 91 course, you will create the portfolio described here. The portfolio may take the form of a traditional paper and binder format or an e-portfolio. You may use the portfolio tool of your choice. Remember that the instructor has to have access to the portfolio. It could be web hosted, delivered on DVD or placed in the college’s electronic dropbox. Due to its large size, it cannot be sent via email.

Create your own unique layout anddesign, ensuring a professional look. Ensure your portfolio is free of spelling and grammatical errors. Include at a minimum, the materials described here. Each numbered point is a section or tab.

  1. Welcome page containing a head shot of yourself. Include an introduction and your contact information. Add two or three sentences about yourself and your career objectives. The photo is only required if you are creating an e-portfolio.
  2. Education. State program name and date of graduation at the top. Highlight 6 – 8 key courses (your choice). Include a 1 or 2 sentence description of each.
  3. Knowledge and Skills
  4. Technical skills.
  5. Soft skills. Describe 3 scenarios demonstrating strong soft skills.
  6. Work Experience
  7. Work experience. Include work placement and paid work.
  8. Applied Knowledge. Describe a project you worked on at your work placement that demonstrated your networking skills. Do the same for your technical support skills. If you cannot draw on work placement experience for this, think of a scenario from your paid work or your college education.
  9. Testimonials. Include 2 – 4 comments you have received from your employer(s) on work you have done. These can come from work placement, paid work or volunteer work.
  10. Research
  11. Interview a person who is in a supervisory role. He/she can work anywhere as long as they hire and supervise staff. Ask him/her the following questions and include the answers in your portfolio.
  12. Name, title, company and contact phone number.
  13. What do you look for in a resume? List 2 - 4 items.
  14. What causes you to throw out a resume or cover letter? List 2 - 4 items.
  15. List any item(s) that cause a resume to stand out above the others. In other words, what can an applicant do to get noticed?
  16. Job Search
  17. Completed Functional skills worksheet.
  18. Completed Personality Traits worksheet.
  19. Review the handouts provided with the course materials. Choose a job advertisement in the CNTS field. It can be a position that you applied for in the past or a position currently being advertised. Include in your portfolio:
  20. a copy of the ad.
  21. a cover letter tailored to the job.
  22. a resume tailored to the position.
  23. alist of references.
  24. Include documentation of your job search experience. You may use the same ad described earlier or something different. Include:
  25. a report of an interview experience. Answer the following: what happened, what was asked, what went well, what changes would you make next time.
  26. a thank you letter written to the interviewer.
  27. Research and list 10 tips on carrying out an effective job search.
  28. Reference letters, if applicable.
  29. Academic awards, if applicable.

Note that the documents must be displayed in the order described above.
