Course Overview: This course introduces cardio-arts as a lifelong fitness activity. This course centers on the basic skills of cardio-arts including punches and kicks. Students will demonstrate motor skills related to the course goals. Students will demonstrate cognitive knowledge by scoring at minimum, 70% on the final examination. A minimum score of 70% is required to earn credit for the course.

Catalog Description: 120G. Somatic and Martial Arts Activities: Instruction and practice in the basic skills and techniques utilized in selected somatic and martial arts movement forms. Graded ABC/no credit. (GE=E3) (2 units)

Required Textbook: Exercise Basics and Benefits. Available on Blackboard.

Student Learning Outcomes: Students who pass the course will:

  1. Understand fundamental knowledge of the following cardio-art skills: sidekick, back kick, front kick jab, hook, uppercut and cross punches.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency of the following cardio-arts skills: side kick, front kick, back kick, jab, hook, cross and uppercut punches.
  3. Understand physical and mental health benefits related to a consistent and regular exercise program to promote health and wellness. These might include nutritional principles, exercise physiology basics, reduction of stress; reduction of disease related to a sedentary lifestyle and increased physical fitness.
  4. Understand departmental faculty expectations for student conduct and academic performance.

University Policies on Course Withdrawal, Cheating and Plagiarism:

Examinations, Attendance, and Assessments:

Packet – 50 points. Completion of written assignments in the Exercise Basics and Benefits packet is required.

Skills Test – 30 points. Students will complete a physical fitness test at the beginning of the quarter and then repeat it at the end of the quarter with an improvement in their fitness parameters.

Written Exam – 50 points

Kinesiology Attendance Policy:

Each student is allowed to miss 2 class periods. If you miss more than 2 class periods a grade of no credit will be assigned. Arriving late 2 times will be considered an absence. Extenuating circumstances with supporting documentation will be considered on an individual basis by the instructor.

Each student gets 2 absences with no deductions. If the student has more than 2 absences, the student has to make those up by attending another class in the Kinesiology Department. If they are not made up by the last day of the quarter the student will get a 10 point deduction for each absence over 2. The student will get an automatic No Credit if they have 5 or more absences even if the absences are considered excused.

Class Conduct Policies:

1. All cell phones and I-Pods are not to be visible during the class session. A 10 point deduction will be awarded to the student if either is visible during class. Leave them turned off in your locker or back pack.

2. Each student is required to sign the attendance sheet each class session they attend.

3. Any student found to be signing in and leaving or signing in for another student will be given an automatic 10 point deduction from the student point base.

5. Respect and consideration for the students and professor should be exhibited by the students at all times.

6. Any student missing 2 consecutive classes during the first 4 weeks of the quarter will get dropped.

7. The student is responsible for ensuring that they are properly registered for the class.

8. Students with a name change during the quarter must notify the Professor. Failure to do so will result in a No Credit for the class.

9. The student is required to fully participate in the exercise activity every class they attend. Failure to do this will result in a 10pt deduction from their total point base.

10. Students may leave the room to use the restroom but make eye contact with the Professor before leaving.

11. All make up notes and assignments are to be turned in before or on the last day of class.

12. Any student arriving 30minutes late for class will not be allowed to sign in and get credit for attending that class.

Tentative Course Content:

Week 1: Orientation, fitness assessment and Introduction of kick boxing skills.

Week 2: Discussion of modification, intensity principles, and workout w/gloves .

Week 3: Discussion Body composition, related health risks, workout w/Drums Alive.

Week 4: Discussion of the components of a thorough exercise program and workout.

Week 5: Goal setting and workout.

Week 6: Nutritional discussion and workout.

Week 7: Discussion of Injury Prevention and workout.

Week 8: Introduction of Boot Camp and Interval Training workout.

Week 9: Reassessment of fitness parameters and notebooks due.

Week10: Evaluation and workout.
