Could Carbonite Disrupt SMB Backup Market?

http://channelnomics.com/2013/03/15/carbonite-disrupt-smb-backup-market/

March 15, 2013

A new Spiceworks survey finds the average small business spends $5,700 per year on backup products and management, and the majority is relatively satisfied with their investments. However, up to one-third of the 1,012 survey participants believe their backup approaches are insufficient and 42 percent believe their data recovery abilities are inadequate.

On the technology side, the Spiceworks survey found the majority of SMBs (60 percent) are using direct attached storage – mostly tape – as their primary backup system. Adoption of hosted backup solutions is growing, with 30 percent now subscribing to a service and 14 percent planning to invest in a hosted solution this year.

More interesting is the sponsor of this research, cloud backup pioneer Carbonite, which is getting very aggressive in expanding beyond its consumer roots into the SMB marketplace. The connotations of high budgets on backup and growing demand points to the opportunity Carbonite is looking to exploit as it builds its SMB market and channel.

But what could be more interesting is whether Carbonite could play the role of market spoiler. Like the multitude of other backup providers, Carbonite is looking to the channel to provide market coverage and rapid growth. It’s adding more functionality, now providing HIPAA-compliant storage and database backup capabilities, which is getting it closer to more sophisticated midmarket backup services. The difference, though, is price.

According to the CTTA State of the Cloud Channel report, backup is the most prevalent cloud service delivered through solution providers, with 61 percent offering some form of managed or hosted offering. Solution providers say they see steady demand for backup, as it tops the list of the most requested services. And, solution providers see backup as having the best chance of retaining its value over the next two years.

Carbonite is selling its clientless cloud backup services for as low as $59 per year per computer. For small businesses, flat rate backup services range from $229 per year up to 250 GB to $599 per year up to 500 GB with no limit on the number of attached endpoints. With such pricing, Carbonite is clearly looking to attack the $5,700 backup spend on conventional services.

However, Carbonite could prove disruptive to managed and cloud-based backup services sold through the channel. There’s no shortage of backup technology companies. While some have brand recognition – Acronis, Axcient, Intronis, Zmada, Datto, to name a few and there are dozens more – none have market dominance. Their model is to provide the infrastructure and tools to enable solution providers and MSPs to deliver and managed cloud services. While not hugely expensive, the per-seat service price can range from $10 to $25 per month. For a 10 person office, the backup costs could run into the thousands of dollars annually.

While Carbonite is a functional and efficient backup service, it’s not for every business. It lacks the ability to backup servers and images, as well as applications. The 500 GB package may be good for a small business, but midmarket shops with 25 to 100 seats will easily exceed that boundary over the course of a year. For such businesses, the more traditional managed service backup provider is probably a better option, as performance and functionality is often more important than price.

However, as SMBs start looking for more efficient and effective backup solutions, they will buy mostly on price and “good enough” functionality. This is where Carbonite and similar services, such as Mozy, will win the volume battle. In the process, Carbonite could dampen the average sale price and profitability of even more sophisticated services, as customers will demand more of them based on the volume pricing model.

Survey: Backup and Disaster Recovery Challenges Persist at Small and Mid-Sized Businesses

Forty-Five Percent of Respondents Have Experienced Data Loss

AUSTIN, TX, Mar 14, 2013 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Data protection and disaster recovery planning is a priority but remains a challenge for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), according to the results of a recent survey by Spiceworks(TM), the vertical network for IT. The study "Backing up SMBs" is sponsored by Carbonite, a provider of cloud backup solutions for consumers and small businesses.

More than 1,000 SMB IT professionals responded to the recent survey, which investigates backup and recovery budgets, technologies, planning, and key considerations for companies with fewer than 1,000 employees. According to the survey, 45 percent of respondents said their organization had experienced a data loss, costing an average of nearly $9,000 in recovery fees. Of those, 54 percent say the data loss was due to a hardware failure.

"Data is the lifeblood of any business -- big or small," said Deni Connor, founding analyst of Storage Strategies NOW. "The opportunity to provide small and mid-sized businesses with better and more cost-effective ways to protect and recover data is huge. While these companies may have smaller IT staffs, they collectively account for a significant portion of the total backup and recovery market."

Additional highlights from the recent survey include:

·  SMBs spend an average of $5,700 each year to manage data backup and

recovery environments. While the majority of respondents (70 percent)

are satisfied with current backup methods, nearly one-third (30

percent) believe their approaches and technologies are insufficient.

·  When it comes to disaster recovery, an even greater number of SMBs (42

percent) believe their company's plans fall short. Furthermore, only

30 percent think all information would be recoverable in the event of

a disaster.

·  The top technology used by small and mid-sized businesses to back up

information is direct-attached storage (DAS), with approximately 60

percent using a form of this approach. However, hosted or cloud-based

backup and recovery offerings have gained a footing among SMBs.

Currently, 30 percent of SMBs use hosted solutions and 14 percent plan

to invest in a hosted offering within the next year.

·  Reliability and security are the top two priorities for SMBs

considering hosted backup solutions. Of those currently using or

planning to implement a private, hybrid or public cloud backup

platform, 77 percent prefer a private or hybrid approach while 23

percent favor a public cloud offering.

"While small and mid-sized businesses recognize the importance of having a data protection and recovery plan, many are using on-premise hardware that leaves them vulnerable to data loss from device failure, performing manual backups infrequently or on-premise problems that affect both the original copy and backups, such as power surges, natural disasters or theft," said Piyum Samaraweera, director of product management at Carbonite. "Cloud backup solutions are an affordable alternative that are simple to manage, secure and reliable, and easily scalable as a business grows."
