Interment at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia

Service

Date: Tuesday, 6 March 2012

Time: 0900

Please arrive at the Old Post Chapel on Fort Myer by 0830. You cannot get to the Old Post Chapel through the main entrance to Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Drive. You must go through either the Wright Gate or the Hatfield Gate. If you are using a GPS, the published address for the Old Post Chapel is 204 Lee Avenue, Fort Myer, VA. In MapQuest this appears to be about a block away from the chapel, but it will get you in the vicinity and there are signs to the chapel posted on the base. If you do enter Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Drive I’m sure the security guard will be able to give you appropriate directions to the Old Post Chapel. There is a map below and the link below has good information and directions to the Old Post Chapel.

Fort Myer Old Post Chapel info and directions.

The roads in the vicinity of Fort Myer and Arlington National Cemetery are very complicated and congested. There are multiple one-way roads and you should anticipate heavy traffic due to rush hour. The Metro is not really practical for getting to the Old Post Chapel, however if you plan to do some additional touring around Washington DC it is quite easy to use and practical for the major attractions.

There will be a brief service at the chapel followed by procession behind the caisson to the gravesite. Guests can either walk or drive behind the caisson. There will be a graveside service then a reception at the Fort Myer’s Officer’s Club. The Officer’s Club is less than a quarter mile away from the chapel.

Weather

The average high temperature in March is 53°F and the average low temperature is 30°F. There is always a chance of ice or snow and it can get quite windy in the cemetery, so please dress warmly and wear good walking shoes if you plan to walk behind the caisson.

Lodging

There are multiple hotels in the Arlington area; I recommend simply looking on line.

Airports

There are three primary airports in the Washington DC area. Baltimore Washington International (BWI), Dulles (IAD) and Reagan National (DCA). Reagan National is the closest and is only about 5 miles from Arlington. Dulles is about 25 miles and a half-hour drive with no traffic. Baltimore-Washington is about 50 miles and an hour drive with no traffic.
