Canyon Lake Middle School 2016-2017

Strengths:

Canyon Lake Middle School’s interdisciplinary site team has effectively collaborated in order to continue to build and maintain high standards for our AVID program. The site team established a monthly schedule and met consistently throughout the year. Site team members had specific roles and responsibilities and completed tasks in the implementation and operation of AVID including the development of the balanced curriculum log (Essential 11.3 and 11.4). As a site team, we were able to plan and put on our ice cream social for parents and AVID students, where we also conducted our orientation and contract signing. Students attended two college tours this year, one to UCR where they participated in a team-building course, in addition to a campus tour of UCI. (Essential 3) Students attended the AVID night at Knott’s Berry Farm and had a family Christmas party. In October AVID planned a school wide fundraiser in order to raise enough money to purchase college flags for each class. In April, all AVID classes participated in our annual college fair, which is a major part of Canyon Lake Middle School’s Open House. Our end of the year activities include the Youth Education Series trip to Disneyland and an end of the year award and celebration banquet. Moving forward, a site team of 8 members, including elective and content area teachers, and both administrators plans to attend Summer Institute (Essential 11.1).

Recommendations:

In order to facilitate the cycle of continuous improvement in our AVID program, The Canyon Lake Middle School Site Team will strengthen the following essential /indicators next year:
  • Essentials 1.1 and 1.2: Maintain consistent articulation with feeder schools to gain momentum in the recruitment process. Refine our current student recruitment plan, which notes site team involvement, on-going recruitment of students to maintain numbers in electives at all grade levels, recruitment of students from feeder schools and retention of current AVID students.
  • Essential 4.2 Create an action plan of interventions with the Site Team to increase the passing rate of AVID students of “C” or better in their content area classes.
  • Essential 4.7: Continue exploring administration of “PSAT” and/or “EXPLORE” to AVID 8th grade students.
  • Essentials 8.2 and 8.3: Assign a tutor trainer designee to collaborate with tutors and ensure that all tutors complete the Advanced Tutor Training. Recruit, hire, and train enough tutors to meet the recommended 1:7 tutor to student ratio. Use trained cross-age tutors if not enough college tutors can be hired.
.
  • Essential 8.4: Create the expectation that students use tutorials to raise grades in their content classes. Use the Tutorial Grade Analysis Activity in the Tutorial Support Curriculum Resource Guide.
  • Essential 8.6 Using a variety of tools, tutors support students to raise the level of inquiry to deepen the quality of tutorials, and to increase the level of critical thinking, demonstrated by the students’ ability to explain their understanding of what they have learned
  • Essentials 9.3 and 9.4: Analyze AVID student skill gaps to improve student achievement. Create and implement an action plan to address those skill gaps by modifying curriculum instruction and tutorial days.
  • Essential 11 Site Team- Maintain established balanced curriculum guide and vertical articulations between grade levels to differentiate and strengthen AVID program policies and grade level curriculum. Continue to articulate with EHS and TCHS to strengthen vertical alignment.
