CANOE CAMPING CHECKLIST FOR OVERNIGHT TRIPS

Use this checklist to ensure that you will not forget any important items and as a guide to lightweight backpacking. Many of the items on this checklist are indicated as being optional and when packing, they should be considered, but only taken along if really needed. PLEASE ASK TO BORROW if you do not have some of these items.

Using this list, a fully loaded weekend pack should weigh no more than 12kg (27 lbs). All food & equipment for a week long trip would weigh no more than 16 kg - 19 Kg, depending upon the food you carry. If your pack weighs more, take everything out & make sure its essential. It is recommended to carry no more than 1/4 of your body weight. Ask friends if you need to borrow equipment.

Personal Basics

q  PFD

q  pack (PLUS dry bag / garbage bag waterproofing – we will discuss in Class Thurs. May 26)

q  sleeping bag (in water proof stuff sac)

q  sleeping pad (closed cell foam or thermarest®)

q  pocket knife

q  whistle (better than yelling)

q  water bottle (full, 1.5L)

q  insulated mug/bowl and spoon

q  flashlight or head lamp MP providing

q  sturdy shoes (PLUS water shoes/ sturdy strap water sandals if you have some)

Toiletries

q  toilet paper (in ziploc bag)

q  personal sanitary supplies

q  tooth paste/ tooth brush

Medical

q  sun glasses

q  sun screen/paba gel / lip balm

q  insect repellent

Personal First Aid Kit/Blister Kit Containing:

q  moleskin/second skin/duct tape (for blisters)

q  personal medication

q  spare glasses*

q  bandaids / antiseptic cleaning pads

q  Survival Kit (Trousse de Survie)

Clothing

Remember to check the weather and also remember that evening temperatures will drop to close to zero due to alpine elevations. Cotton clothing and jeans ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

BASE LAYER – T shirt and/or long sleeve synthetic shirt (NO COTTON)

MID LAYERS:

·  Fleece jacket

·  Warm leggings / long johns for evening

OUTER LAYERS:

·  Rain Jacket & pants

·  Mitts & Tuque
