This is a position specific recruitment, open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below. The resulting list of eligibles will be used to fill this MDTA position/function only. Nature of Work: The K-9 Unit Trainer & Instructor at the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) will be responsible for overseeing the training of MDTA Police K-9 Unit in the areas of explosive detection, narcotic detection, and patrol work. This position will train and instruct K-9 teams (1 handler and 1 dog per team) by ensuring the K-9 teams meet: 1) the weekly and monthly training requirements and, 2) annual re-certification requirements of the Transportation Security Administration, established outside certifying organizations, and the MDTA Police and Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission. This position will inspect, evaluate, and administratively maintain daily schedules to include work hours, training hours, and medical appointments for the canines. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for testifying in court and properly storing, handling, and transporting all explosive and narcotic training aids utilized for instruction. The current vacancy is located the Baltimore Washington International/Thurgood Marshall (BWI/TM) Airport (Anne Arundel County).
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
For education obtained outside the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.
Experience: Four years of experience in administrative or professional work. *Four years of experience must include handling K-9 Teams and delivering training to K-9 Teams for advanced canine training methods as they relate to canine explosive detection, narcotics detection, and canine patrol.
*Applicants must possess an instructor certification from an accredited agency, national canine organization or civilian vendor in explosive detection, narcotics detection, and/or tactical canine patrol. You must submit a copy of your certification with your application.

Notes/Substitutions:
1. Additional experience in administrative or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required general experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
  1. Applicants must possess a Class C Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.
  2. Candidates with prior military experience must have received an Honorable Discharge. Applicants must provide a copy of their DD-214.
