Candidate’sApplicationforPromotionandTenure(CAPT) Introduction

TheTenureandPromotionApplicationprocesseshavebeenincorporatedintooneapplicationwhich willserveastheapplicationfor bothtenure and promotionfromAssistantProfessortoAssociate Professor.Thegoalofthetenureandpromotionprocessistoprovideathoroughandobjective reviewofthesubstanceandmeritsofeachapplicant.TheUniversityprovideseachfacultymember withafullandobjectivereviewbasedonestablishedtenureandpromotioncriteria.Thereviewmust besufficient tosupportactioninthebest interest oftheUniversityandinfairness totheapplicant. Toaccomplishthis,theevaluationprocesscomprisesanindependentreviewatmultiplelevels: department,dean,vicepresidentforacademicaffairs,andthepresident.The“UniversityTenureand PromotionCommittee”reviewsallapplicationsforconformitytotenureandpromotionprocedures. Thedeliberationsandresultingrecommendationsateachlevelmustbebasedontheprescribed criteria, with the decision of the president being final.

Thefollowingguidelinesareprovidedtoassistboththeapplicantsandacademicunitswiththe preparationofsupportingmaterialsandmanagementofportfoliosforfacultyapplyingfortenureand promotion.Thedeanofacollege/unitmaydistributeadditionalproceduralguidelinesand informationforpreparationofcandidateportfolios.Itisrecognizedthatvariationsinrequirements occur among disciplinesand departments.Candidatesshouldconsultwith the appropriate department chair regardingthe requirements and practices in the area.

Instructions

Theperformanceportfoliosintheareasofteaching,advising,research,andserviceconstitutethe basisfortenureandpromotion. Facultyapplyingfortenureandpromotionwillsubmitthetenure andpromotionapplicationandsupportingportfoliotothedepartmentchairaccordingtotheschedule outlinedbelow.Theapplicationlettershouldincludetherequestforbothtenureandpromotionto Associate Professor.

•Representative samples ofFaculty Advisement.

•Documentation of creativeteachingmethods/skillsemployed incourses taught.

•Listingofspecialprogramscoordinated(e.g.,Master’s,Specialists, andDoctoral Levels;DepartmentalTeachingConcentrations,etc.).Includelistofstudents’names, doctoraldissertation or master’s theses/projects, dates degrees wereawarded; status of research inprogress.

•DocumentationofserviceasamentorinanorganizedUniversitystudentmentoring programorotherdiscipline-specificspecialprogram,suchasundergraduatehonors programs.Evidenceofpreparingstudentsforexternalexams(e.g.,MCAT)orother competitions.

•Examplesofthe development ofnewcourses inkeepingwithestablished criteria for the discipline or profession.

Examples ofSupporting Documentation

•Grantssubmitted(aminimumoftwo)alongwithevidencetodemonstrateserious effortsweremadetoattainthe grant.

•Manuscript(s)submittedtorefereedpublications.Writtendocumentationfromthe editor or publishinghouse should be included, along with projectedpublication date.

•Grantsfunded(individualorcollaborative).Aminimumofoneexternallyfundedgrant.

Documentationshouldincludethetitleofthegrant,sourceoffunds,durationofthe grant, candidate’s role (e.g. Principal investigator, project director, co-principal

investigator) and total dollar amount of the grant. Also include award letter or notification of funding.

•Articles published in non-refereed press.

•Paperspresentedorcreativeworksperformedorexhibitedatacademicsession, refereed,juried,and/orinvited(e.g.musicalcompositions,plays,paintings,sculptures, etc.)

•Book(s) published in the discipline.

•Chapter(s)in book published in refereed press.

•Articles,proceedings,orcreativeendeavorspublishedinacademicrefereedjournal, listpublicationsinreversechronologicalorderfollowing the stylemanualappropriate forthediscipline.Namesofco-authorsshouldbelistedintheorderinwhichtheyappear in the publication.

Minimum(promotion toAssociateProfessor[and/orTenure]):at leastthreepeer-reviewedpublications,includingoneasseniorauthor; for Fine Arts, participation in three major exhibitions. Forgraduate faculty,atleastfourpeer-reviewedpublications,includingoneas seniorauthor;for FineArts, participation in fourmajorexhibitions. (Effectivewith faculty class 2005-06).

Minimum(promotiontoProfessor):atleastfourpeer-reviewed publications,includingtwoasseniorauthor.ForFineArts, participationinfourmajorexhibitions.Forgraduatefaculty,atleast sixpeer-reviewedpublications;forFineArts,participationinsix majorexhibitions.(Effective with facultyclass 2005-06).

•Editorshipofinternational,national/statescholarlyjournal.

•Development of computer software, documentary/audio visual work, etc. (for publication)

•Reviewer orreaderforacademicorprofessional journal,proceedings,orproposals.

•Fellowshiporawards: identifyas recipient of state ornational fellowship or award.

•Other relevantactivities(e.g.,researchpatents,consultancyin areaof expertise,etc.)

V.Serviceand Professional Activities
