Training Bursary Terms and Conditions

  1. Bursary Scheme
  2. Cancer Research UK isa registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), in the Isle of Man (1003) and in Scotland (SC041666) and a company limited by guarantee with registered company number 4325234, whose registered address is at Angel Building, 407 St John Street, London EC1V 4AD (“Cancer Research UK”).
  3. Cancer Research UK is running a bursary scheme (“Bursary Scheme”) which will enable people to attend one ‘Talk Cancer’ or ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop (“Workshop”) without needing to pay the normal attendance fee (“Bursary”). For the avoidance of doubt, Cancer Research UK will not fund any other costs associated with attending a Workshop.
  4. The bursaries are non-transferable and non-negotiable. There is no cash or other alternative.
  1. Eligibility

2.1To be eligible for a Bursary, you must:

2.1.1Be aged 18 years old or over; and

2.1.2Have not previously attended a Cancer Research UK ‘Talk Cancer’ or ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop if you are applying to attend a ‘Talk Cancer’ workshop.

2.1.3Have not previously attended a ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop if you are applying to attend a ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop.

2.2It is advised that a ‘Talk Cancer’ workshop is attended prior to attending a ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop. Bursary applicants for ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshops are therefore still eligible to apply even if they have previously attended a Talk Cancer workshop.

2.3Applicants who have previously been awarded a bursary-funded place on a ‘Talk Cancer’ workshop are still eligible to apply to the bursary for a place at a ‘Talk Cancer: Train the Presenter’ workshop.

  2. Bursary applicants are required to complete and return an application form. This form is available to download from the Cancer Research UK website or can be requested by emailing
  3. Completed application forms should be emailed to with the subject header ‘Bursary application’. Alternatively, completed applications can be posted to: Talk Cancer, Health Community Engagement Team, Cancer Research UK, Angel Building, 407 St John Street, London EC1V 4AD.
  4. Cancer Research UK will accept one application per person. Where more than one person from the same team/organisation wishes to apply, each person must complete and return one application form.
  5. Applicants should ensure they complete their application in full. Cancer Research UK may contact applicants if it requires further information before their application can be considered. Cancer Research UK may decline any applications that are incomplete.
  6. Cancer Research UK does not accept responsibility for incorrect email addresses or incomplete personal details provided by applicants, or for network, computer, hardware or software failures of any kind, which may restrict or delay the sending or receipt of an application.
  7. Bursary applications will be reviewed by Cancer Research UK staff and any bursaries will be awarded at their sole discretion. Cancer Research UK’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  8. Applications can be submitted all year round.
  9. To avoid disappointment of workshops being fully booked, applicants are advised to submit theirBursary application at least 4-5 weeks ahead of their requested workshop date.
  10. Last-minute applications will only be considered where a workshop is under-subscribed.
  11. Cancer Research UK will endeavour to confirm the outcome of a Bursary application 3 weeks prior to the desired workshop date but will not be held responsible should the workshop be fully booked by the time of the decision.
  12. Bursary applicants will be notified of the result of their application by email. Successful Bursary applicants will be required to confirm their acceptance to any Bursary no later than 2 weeks prior to the workshop date requested in their application form (“Workshop Date”). Cancer Research UK reserves the right to withdraw a Bursary if it does not receive confirmation of acceptance of the Bursary at least one week before the Workshop Date.

3.12Where possible, Cancer Research UK will provide feedback to unsuccessful Bursary applicants. In certain circumstances, the applicant may be given the chance to re-apply for a Bursary.

3.13Cancer Research UK reserves the right to decline any individual’s application and not to award any Bursaries in its sole discretion.

3.14Cancer Research UK reserves the right to withdraw the Bursary Scheme at any time.

3.15Any personal data received from applicants will only be used and/or shared with third parties where necessary for the proper purposes of administering applications and the Bursary Scheme and in accordance with Cancer Research UK’s Privacy Policy at

3.16Bursary Trainees agree to Cancer Research UK publishing their award of a Bursary on the Cancer Research UK website for promotional purposes.

  1. Workshop Attendance

4.1In the event that a Bursary Trainee wishes to attend a Workshop on a different date to that which was requested on their application form, the Bursary may only be transferred to an alternative Workshop Date at the sole discretion of Cancer Research UK. Where possible, the new workshop date should be within the same financial year, or within six months of the original Workshop Date. Bursary Trainees must inform Cancer Research UK of their desire to change the Workshop Date at least four weeks prior to the Workshop they were due to attend.

4.2Bursary Trainees must inform Cancer Research UK at least two weeks in advance in the event that they are no longer able to attend a Workshop on their Workshop Date.

4.3In the event that a Bursary Trainee cancels their Workshop place and does not wish to attend an alternative Workshop, Cancer Research UK is under no obligation to re-issue the Bursary at a later date.

4.4If a successful Bursary applicant fails to attend the Workshop on the day, the Bursary will not be re-issued.

4.5By applying for a Bursary, you agree to Cancer Research UK contacting you for feedback by phone or email following any subsequent attendance at a Workshop.

4.6If, due to adverse circumstances such as illness, Cancer Research UK is unable to provide a trainer to deliver a Workshop, Cancer Research UK will arrange for the relevant Bursary Trainee to attend a Workshop on an alternative date.

4.7 Cancer Research UK reserves the right to amend or cancel any Workshop, Workshop time, Workshop date or Workshop venue. If Cancer Research UK does this, it will endeavour to offer the Bursary Trainee attendance at an alternative workshop.

5. Workshop Material, Intellectual Property and Marketing

5.1All intellectual property rights and other third party rights in all documents and slides shown or distributed at or in connection with the Workshop (including hard and electronic copies of presentations in the case of ‘Talk Cancer; Train the Presenter’ workshops (“Course Materials”) are owned by Cancer Research UK.

5.2No content in whole or in part of the Course Materials may be copied, reproduced, uploaded, posted, displayed, linked to or used in any way without prior written permission of Cancer Research UK. Any such use is strictly prohibited and will constitute an infringement of the copyright and other intellectual property rights of Cancer Research UK.

5.3The Course Materials are intended for use by the successful Bursary applicant only and must not be passed on to any third parties.

5.4Cancer Research UK shall have the right to alter and amend the content of the Course Materials and the Workshop as it sees fit and in accordance with developments in the field of cancer research.

5.5In the case of ‘Talk Cancer- Train the Presenter’ training, the Workshop and Course Materials are only to be used to deliver a presentation and inform others, and specifically not to provide any diagnostic or other medical advice or to train others about cancer or health in general.

5.6Bursary Trainees shall not refer to the Bursary, Cancer Research UK or the Workshop in any advertising or marketing materials without obtaining Cancer Research UK’s prior consent.

6. Liability

6.1Subject to clause 6.3, Cancer Research UK’s maximum aggregate liability arising:

6.1.1 under or in connection with these terms and conditions (whether arising in contract, tort including negligence, restitution, breach of statutory duty, misrepresentation or otherwise); or

6.1.2out of attendance or non-attendance at the Workshop; or

6.1.3out of any use made of the Course Materials or any part of them; or

6.1.4out of any representation or statement made in the Course Materials or at the Workshop,

shall be limited to five hundred pounds (£500)..

6.2All warranties, conditions and other terms implied by statute or common law are, to the fullest extent permitted by law, excluded from this Agreement.

6.3Nothing in this Agreement shall exclude or in any way limit Cancer Research UK’s liability for :

6.3.1fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;

6.3.2death or personal injury caused by its negligence;

6.3.3any breach of statutory rights under sections 49-52 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015; or

6.3.4any other liability to the extent such liability may not be excluded or limited as a matter of law.

6.4These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with English law and applicants agree to irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts in respect of any dispute arising out of or in connection with them.

6.5Cancer Research UK reserves the right to amend these Bursary Terms and Conditions and will use reasonable endeavours to notify changes to applicants.
