Description:

Abstract:

This data set consists of 12 separate images that are clear-sky composites of

generalized land-surface cover in North America during 2006. There is one image

for each month of 2006; together these images capture seasonal land-cover changes.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources

Canada produced these images fromdata obtained with the Moderate Resolution

Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Terra satellite. This

satellite, part of NASA’s Earth Observing System, passes over the entire Earth's

surface every 1 to 2 days. Each of the images in this series is a composite,

assembled from ten days worth of satellite observations, to create a mostly cloud-

free view. The MODIS top-of-atmosphere reflectance data was resampled to 2.5

kilometers per pixel from the original spatial resolution of 250 or 500 meters per

pixel, and was converted to TIF format to provide easily accessible images showing

generalized land cover for North America. To highlight differences in land cover,

a false-color composite is used: ice and snow appear in pink, dense vegetation in

orange, sparser vegetation in green, and water in dark blue.

Purpose:

The North American Atlas data are intended for geographic display and analysis at

the national and continental level. These data should be displayed and analyzed at

scales appropriate for 1:10,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by

the Commission for Environmental Cooperation in the use of these data.

Supplemental_Information:

This data set consists of twelve monthly images and associated world files, in a

single zip file. The files use a consistent naming convention: na##.tif for the

TIF images, and na##.tifw for the world files, where ## is the numeric indicator

for the month. For example, na09.tif is the image for September, 2006.

Top-of-atmosphere reflectance data provides information about the energy reflected

from the surface of the Earth, as measured at the satellite location at the top of

the atmosphere. Corrections to adjust for scattering and other atmospheric effects

have not been applied to these data.

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is an internationalorganization

created by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America under the North

American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). The CEC was established

to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and

environmental conflicts, and to promote the effective enforcement of environmental

law. The Agreement complements theenvironmental provisions of the North American

Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Further information on the CEC is available from
