Can I help you? Polite requests

(Aim of this lesson is to learn how to make polite requests)

  1. Visiting Tourist Places. Match photos(A-D) and the places (1-4):

Name some other places that you visit when you go travelling, e.g. museum, airport etc

  1. Check the meaning of words from the box.
  1. Making Requests: listen to four conversations, pause after each one and say:

(Speak Out Elementary, Unit 1.3 Track 1.9)

-Where is a tourist?

-What does each tourist buy?

Complete the requests:

  1. In a souvenir shop, batteries
  2. Money exchange, change money
  3. Sandwich bar, sandwich
  4. Train station, single ticket to Sydney
  1. Role-play the conversations and underline polite requests.

Conversation 1

T = Tourist S = Shop assistant

T:Excuse me. Do you speak English?

S:Yes. Can I help you?

T:Can I have one of those, please?

S:One of these batteries? For your camera?

T:Yes, that’s right.

S:OK. That’s eleven euros, please.

Conversation 2

T = Tourist C = Clerk

T:Excuse me. Do you speak English?

C:Yes. Can I help you?

T:Could I change this money, please?

C:Fine. That’s four hundred and fifty pounds. Here you are – one hundred, two, three, four hundred. And ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty. Four hundred and fifty.

T:Thank you.

C:You’re welcome.

Conversation 3

T = Tourist W = Waiter

T:Can I have a sandwich and a cola, please?

W:That’s six euros.

T:Ah, I only have five euros. How much is the sandwich?

W:Four euros fifty. And the cola is one fifty.

T:OK. Could I have the sandwich, but no cola?

W:That’s four fifty.

T:Thank you.

Conversation 4

TS:Can I help you?

T:Could I have a single to Sydney, please?

TS:Today?

T:Yes.

TS:That’s twenty-five dollars.

T:Here you are. Which platform is it?

TS:Platform three.
