The opportunity

The Steele Family Foundation is looking for a mature, experienced fundraising professional to lead a $2million capital campaign. Funds raised will be used to build a school in India (in partnership with a registered charity in India), and ensure on-going sustainability. The school will serve children in rural Tamil Nadu who would otherwise not have access to education.

Working with an entrepreneurial team here in the GTA, the incoming candidate will work collaboratively to develop the strategy to reach new donors through a combination of personal connections through The Steele Family’s network and identifying prospective donors. The incoming candidate will also have the opportunity to work with an experienced and successful entrepreneur. Be prepared to bring an entrepreneurial approach to your work.

About The Steele Family Foundation

The Steele Family Foundation has primarily focused on supporting local, Toronto charities that assist those who struggle with poverty, homelessness and marginalization.Through an introduction by Mother Teresa’s order of the Missionaries of Charity here in Toronto, The Steele Family Foundation learned of The Sacred Trust Project in Tamil Nadu and has undertaken the task of supporting the team in southern India by raising funds to build a school, to offer support and ensure on-going sustainability.

You’re the ideal candidate if:

•You have experience raising major gifts

•You are a strong fundraising generalist who can do it all: write proposals, make the ask in person, do prospect research, coach and support the volunteer team and ensure appropriate stewardship is undertaken

•Understand international development

•You are familiar with the Indian education system

•You can work collaboratively yet still have the ability to make decisions when they are required

•You are comfortable in a leadership role, equally comfortable allowing others to lead with your support and to learn from those with skills and competencies different than yours

•You recognize that good fundraisers also understand programming and can make meaningful contributions to the programming discussion

•You understand the importance of relationship building and have demonstrated success in doing so

•You are comfortable engaging with a diversity of people

•You are comfortable working with senior executives

•You are able to work from home and have the flexibility to attend meetings in Caledon and Toronto

•You are able to travel occasionally

•You take your work seriously, but not yourself

Primary Responsibilities

Planning, execution and evaluation

•Working with Cathy Mann of Cathy Mann & Associates:

odevelop the strategic fundraising plan for the capital campaign, develop achievable yet ambitious goals and accompanying budgets

ohelp identify and recruit an appropriate volunteer cabinet, in conjunction with The Steele Family Foundation

oDevelop customized approaches for individual donors, take the lead on donor asks or support the volunteer who will be asking for the donation

oEvaluate campaign progress and plan accordingly

oIdentify prospective donors through The Steele Family Foundation connections and prospect research

•Conduct prospect research to identify prospective donors

•Develop customized proposals for prospective donors

•Track campaign progress

•Develop a case for support

Financial and systems management

•Provide regular reporting against goals to the campaign team and Board and other stakeholders

Employment Conditions

The incumbent will work from a home office, with occasional meetings in Toronto and Caledon. Travel in and around Toronto will be required for donor visits. Other travel may be required.

This is a contract position, expected to last 12 – 18 months with a possibility of becoming a longer-term position as The Steele Family Foundation extends its mandate to support larger domestic and internationally-based education projects.
