2014 BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT

Calling all race fans!!! Join us for 2014 Battlefield District Pinewood Derby!!!

The District Pinewood Derby is open to all interested Cub Scouts in the District. Winning the Pinewood Derby Race at the Pack level is not a requirement to participate in the District Pinewood Derby Races.

All cars must be registered by 2:30 pm. If a car does not meet specifications it will be returned to the racer for modification, but must be registered and pass inspection by 2:30 pm. At registration each car will be assigned a number. When a car is officially "checked - in", it will be placed in the official garage, racers will not be allowed to handle their car until the race is over.

Races will be grouped by rank: Tigers, Wolfs, Bears, Webelos 1, and Webelos 2. The winners of each grouping will race in the finals to determine the Battlefield District Pinewood Derby Champion!

There will be a separate Sibling Class as well as an Adult Classic 5oz Class and an AdultHeavy 15oz Class. Adults are encouraged to race in either the Adult Classic or the Adult Heavy Class. The rules that the Cub Scouts follow also apply to the Siblings and Adult Classic Classes.

Race Process (new this year)

-Each car will race twice in each lane of the track.

-At the end of each heat, cars will be marked with color sticker representing 1st, 2nd, and 3rdplace

-After each car has raced six times then the top three cars will be decided based on the number ofthe colored stickers.

-If necessary, race offs will occur to break a tie to determine the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

Please keep in mind that the Pinewood Derby is held in the spirit of friendly competition among the boys. All judges and helpers are volunteers that are trying to do the best job that they can and there will be some close calls to make. The judges’ decisions are final and your support of the spirit of the event is appreciated.

Car Specifications: (Official BSA race requirements)

1. The car must have been made during the current year. Only cars built by the Cub Scout and an adult helper may be entered in the Cub Scout Races.

2. Only the official BSA Pinewood Derby kit may be used. Other sources of wheels, axles and/or bodies will result in disqualification. Only current model kits may be used.

-THE WHEELS AND THE AXLES IN THE BOX ARE THE ONLY APPROVED WHEELS AND AXLES THAT WILL PASS INSPECTION ON RACE DAY.

-THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS IS IF YOU PURCHASE MULTICOLORED WHEELS FROM THE SCOUT SHOP.

3. The Body can be shaped, hollowed out, or built up (within specifications below) from the original block. The nose of the car must be so designed as to allow it to rest on the starting post on the racetrack. The front edge of the wheels must be behind the nose of the car.

4. Extending the wheel base is not allowed.

-You may only move the wheelbase ¼ inch IF the predrilled wheelbase is not square.

5. The customizing on the car must be firmly attached and within the limits below.

6. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.

7. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

8. The height of the car must not exceed 6 inches.

9. The maximum width between the wheels is 1 3/4 inches.

10. There must be 3/8 inches of clearance space beneath the car to allow for track groves.

11. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces. Although there will be scales at check - in, it is highly recommend that your car is weighed prior to check - in.

12. Wheels may be sanded to remove flashing only. Any reduction in width or diameter, or change in shape of wheels or axles will result in disqualification.

13. Wheel bearings and bushings, are prohibited. Washers may be used as a weight only.

14. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.

15. Any details added must be within the length, width, and weight limits.

16. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

17. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in or on the car.

18. Magnets, moveable weights such as mercury, roller bearings, wheel weight etc. are prohibited and will result in disqualification.

19. If the front of the car is not obvious, the front of the car must be marked.

20. Lubrication - Only dry graphite shall be used to lubricate wheels and axles; oil, silicone and sprays such as WD-40 are prohibited.

21. Repairs - will be limited to replacement of axles or wheels broken in the course of the race. The car must be ready to race the next time it is called.
