Call for Papers

The American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice (JPI) is soliciting papers for a special collection on Diversity and Inclusion in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Theoretical, empirical and practice papersare welcomed. Papers are being solicited both for the peer-reviewed Technical Paper section and for a more practice-oriented Forum section. For this special collection, forum items will be fully peer-reviewed.

Papers covering issues in industry and higher education across all dimensions of diversity described in ASCE’s Policy 417 are sought. ASCE’s Policy Statement on Diversity reads:

ASCE supports and encourages the equitable opportunity for participation of all people within the civil engineering profession without regard to gender or gender identity, race, national origin, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation, or any other characteristic within the confines of the law (http://www.asce.org/Diversity-and-Inclusion/).

Sample topics for papers include:

●  Policies and regulations

●  Outreach/recruitment

●  Workforce development

●  Inclusive workforce environment and practices

●  Global and societal issues (e.g. role of engineers in UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to equality and inclusion https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org)

●  Teaching students to employ principles of universal design in their work

●  Complexity and fluidity of diverse identities

●  Inclusive teaching and learning environments (i.e., creating a more inclusive curriculum by applying principles of universal design for learning [UDL]; implementing culturally responsive pedagogy; and recognizing and combatting microaggressions)

●  Other topics related to diversity and inclusion in civil engineering education and practice

While an abstract submission is not required prior to paper submission, the co-editors are willing to review an up to 500 word abstract prior to paper submission and provide feedback as to the suitability of the abstract for the collection. Please send abstracts to .

All submissions for the special collection will be subject to full peer review. By submitting your manuscript, authors are attesting that their paper contains original work has not previously been published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Call for Reviewers

JPI is also solicitingreviewers for its special collection on Diversity and Inclusion in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Researchers and practitioners that are experts in the same subject areas as the papers sought for this special collection should indicate their willingness to volunteer as a reviewer by completing this survey: ASCE JPI Special Collection - Reviewers. You can also indicate how many papers you wish to review. Reviewers will evaluate paper submissions based on the predefined criteria andrequirements of JPIand this call. Reviewers will provide feedback within 4 weeks of receiving the request to review and will evaluate the paper and the research or practice, suggest improvements and make a recommendation to the editors about whether to accept, reject or request changes to the article.
