Calit2 Emulex Fellows Program for 2006-07

The Calit2 Emulex Fellows Program for 2006-07 will be available to 2nd year and beyond graduate students to enable them to work on their Calit2-related dissertation or thesis.

AVAILABLE FUNDING

A total of approximately $200,000 is available for the Calit2 Emulex Fellows Program. All funds awarded for 2006-07 must be spent during that fiscal year.Eligible graduate students may apply for fellowship and/or fee stipend support of either $10,000 or $20,000 to work on their Calit2-related dissertation or thesis topics. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty member mentoring the student whocould comment on the merits of the proposed research and its applicability to Calit2’s mission. No matching funds are required.

IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES

  • Call for nominations would go out at the beginning of Spring Quarter.
  • Fellowship stipends of up to $10,000 or $20,000 will be paid directly to the student, or toward fees,in a manner to be determined by the student and the student’s department.
  • Up to twelve $10,000 awards and four $20,000 awards will be available.
  • Fellowships will be partly merit based. Criteria include grades and productivity.Priority will be given to those whose researchhas direct relevance to Calit2’s mission.
  • Highly inter- or multi-disciplinary projects, and/or projects with anoutreach component,willreceive more favorable review.
  • Priority will be given to graduate students whose faculty mentor/advisor is an affiliate of Calit2.
  • Support to graduate students whose faculty mentor/advisor has received no or limited financial support from Calit2 in the past will be given priority.

APPLICATION AND AWARD IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS

  • Students will need to complete a Calit2 Emulex Fellows application and submit it to Calit2, along with required attachments, by May 15, 2006.
  • A Calit2 faculty ad hoc committee will review applications and make recommendations of awards and funding amounts to the Calit2 director.
  • Students, their mentors and school assistant deans will be notified of awarded fellowshipsby June 15, 2006.
  • Departments/schools will prepare fellowship forms (including payment schedules), sign and forward them to Calit2. Accounting information will be completed by Calit2 and the form forwarded to the Office of Graduate Studies.

REQUIREMENTS OF STUDENTS RECEIVING FELLOWSHIPS

  • To participate in Calit2 events such as seminars and SURF-IT activities.
  • To participate in or help organize monthly brown bag/seminars for the Calit2 Emulex Fellows where the Fellows will present their work to their cohorts.
  • To participate in or help organize the Graduate Student Interdisciplinary workshop (Spring quarter).
  • To provide a one-page progress report on their dissertation/thesis work at the close of the award period.
