Calhoun County Schools Child Nutrition Programs

Programs Utilized by Calhoun County Schools

  • School Nutrition Program

School Nutrition Programs provide nutritious, low-cost or free lunches for West Virginia children in a variety of settings. Local school districts make their own decisions about menu options, but the lunches must meet at least 1/3 of a child's daily need for nutrition. The School Breakfast Program allows school children to eat a healthy breakfast at low or no cost, depending on a family's income. The Office of Child Nutrition's goal is to ensure that schools lunches and breakfasts are nutritious, well balanced meals that contribute to our students' health and success in school and throughout life.

  • Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

In today's eat-and-run way of life, fruits and vegetables are often left off the menu. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provide all children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day. It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. The program's goal is to create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices and increasing children's fruit and vegetable consumption.

  • Summer Food Service Program

When school is out, many children are at risk for poor nutrition. The Summer Food Service program is a federal program that provides all children with nutritious meals during the summer months at no cost to the child. Healthy summer meals are served at a variety of sites such as schools, parks, pools, housing complexes, churches and town halls. Although the Summer Food Service Program is administered by local nonprofit or government agencies, the meals must meet the United States Department of Agriculture's meal pattern requirements.
Meals may be prepared on site or transported from another location. Some sites offer only a meal while others include organized education and/or recreational activities. Children and teenagers 18 years and younger may receive free meals and snacks at participating sites throughout the state.

  • After School At-Risk Meals Program

The at-risk afterschool meals component of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) offers Federal funding to afterschool programs that serve a meal or snack to children in low-income areas.

  • Use of identiMetrics for point of service meal calculations. Calhoun County Schools has implemented a biometric finger scanning identification program in an effort to provide security for your child’s cafeteria account and eliminate clerical errors. The software scans the finger for identification, but does not store a copy of the fingerprint. Instead the software creates a template of the unique fingerprint characteristics. No fingerprints can be recreated or delivered to any agency – governmental or otherwise. If you wish your child to opt out of finger scanning then you will need to contact Chris Melonas at Calhoun County Schools, 540 Alan B. Mollohan Drive, Mt. Zion, WV 26151 304-354-7011, Ext. 16
  • Free Breakfast & Lunch through the Community Eligibility Option (CEO)

Calhoun County Schools will be implementing a new option available to all schools participating in National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs called the Community Eligibility Option (CEO) for the school year 2013-2014. This will allow your child(ren) to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household each day of the school year. Your child(ren) will be able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application.

  • Grab ‘n’ Go Breakfast, Breakfast After First Period. Reimbursable breakfasts are either served in the cafeteria or packaged in individually grab ‘n’ go bags. Many schools already offer a break from classes in the morning or during an early morning period. By serving a reimbursable meal at this time, students who were not hungry first thing in the morning or those who ate breakfast very early now have a chance to eat a healthy meal.
