Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Development Program provides up to eight young singers with the opportunity to study and perform under a highly prestigious staff of teachers and performers.

This program is intended to benefit Canadian singers who have completed advanced or graduate-level training in music and serves as a bridge between academic programs and the professional world of opera.

Emerging Artists perform in a fully staged public production with orchestra. Past seasons have included Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Berlioz’sBéatrice et Bénédict, Handel’s Ariodante, Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilègesL’heure espagnole, and Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia.Based on level of ability, Emerging Artists are assigned suitable supporting and cover roles in Calgary Opera main-stage productions. Additional performance experience includes an Opera in Schools tour, recitals, and community outreach events.

Participants become members of and receive remuneration as contracted members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

• The Emerging Artist Development Program is for singers beginning a professionaloperatic careerand requires that applicants demonstrate exceptional operatic andtheatrical skills as evidenced in their prior training and experience.

• Applicants are typically between the ages of 22 and 32.

• All applications will be screened by Calgary Opera’s audition committee and are considered confidential. Calgary Opera reserves the right to decline to audition singers who do not meet the above criteria. It is not the policy of Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist audition committee to give post-audition feedback.

• If granted an audition, Calgary Opera will supply an accompanist at no charge to the applicant. The applicant may elect to audition with their own accompanist.

• If accepted as an Emerging Artist with Calgary Opera, the singer will be under contract from October 2015 to May 2016. They agree to move to and reside in Calgary for the duration of the program.If the applicant is not prepared to accept the contract for its entire duration, they should not apply.

Complete and sign the two-page application formon the next page and include ALL six listed items.

COMPLETED APPLICATION REQUIRES:

  1. Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant Status. Please provide a clean, legible photocopy (on 8.5” x 11” paper) of a birth certificate, passport or other legal documentation.
  1. TWO letters of recommendation from authorities in the operatic field –

voice teachers, voice coaches, conductors, opera stage director, general directors or other artistic administrator.

BY POST: These should arrive sealed by the reference authority with the application package. If they must arrive separately, ensure that they are sent directly from the reference authority, and are postmarked no later than October 20.
EMAIL: Letters of recommendation will be accepted by email if sent to.They must be emailed directly from the reference authority by the deadline of October 20.

  1. ONE black and white 8” x 10” glossy headshot photo - include name, phone, and email on the back.
  1. One copy of a concise, current resume which includes ALL of the following:

• academic background

• recent operatic experience (indicate year, role and company)

• awards and scholarships

• languages spoken and sung

• Actors’ Equity status or other union affiliation

  1. ONE stamped, self-addressed (9.5” x 4”) envelope.
  1. Completed application form, dated and signed.

All materials submitted become the property of Calgary Opera and will not be returned. It is recommended the applicant retain a photocopy of their application for reference.

Only requested material will be taken into consideration when evaluating – all additional material will be discarded. Please, do not send CDs, DVDs, press packets or any information other than the six items listed above.
