Lynne Walker MA at Calder Valley Counselling, Halifax, Yorkshire. Relate qualified experienced counsellor providing confidential, psychosexual therapy, couple, relationship, and life issue counselling and supervision

About Me

Having initially had a career in nursing and midwifery I started counselling in 1995, and have trained and practiced ever since.

I have an MA in integrative counselling (University of Manchester), and diplomas in counselling and human relations, and psychosexual therapy. I trained at Relate as a couple counsellor, family counsellor, young people’s/children’s counsellor, trainer and supervisor.

In addition to my private practice I practice as a psychosexual therapist and counsellor for Relate.

I have supervised therapists and counsellors within Relate since 2001. I also supervise counsellors in other work settings, and am on the supervisor network for Leeds University and other local universities/colleges.

I am an accredited supervisor for BASRT (British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapists) and MBACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and abide by their codes of ethics and practice.

I am married and we are the proud parents of two grown sons.

I hold an enhanced CRB check (police check for working with children and vulnerable adults).

I welcome clients of any ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, culture, or ability.

Psychosexual Therapy

Couple or individual work to resolve sexual problems within a therapeutic environment, using a Cognitive Behavioural theoretical framework.

Also being an experienced relationship counsellor enables us to resolve any relationship problems before moving into PST if this is needed.

My nursing/midwifery experience gives me a sound knowledge of medical conditions which may affect sexual functioning.

Issues worked with include:

‘Gone off sex’

Inhibited sexual desire

Erectile dysfunction

Rapid ejaculation

Difficulty in having penetrative sex (vaginismus).

Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)

Sexual addiction

Referrals from medical teams welcomed.

Many people are nervous about this kind of work initially. Reservations are usually dispelled after our first meeting where I explain how the therapy proceeds, and give reassurance that clients are not asked to do anything sexual in the counselling room.

All treatment programmes are tailored to the needs of the individual clients.

Relationship Counselling

I am a Relate trained couple counsellor with over 14 years experience in couple counselling. I work with couples or individuals.

Issues worked with include:

Help with problems regarding couple relationships to strengthen partnerships.

Help to explore the sustainability of relationships.

Sadly, sometimes to give support when relationships come to an end.

To explore difficulties in forming or sustaining relationships.

To help break unhelpful patterns of behaviour.

Help where difficulty is being experienced by blended families e.g. step-parenting.

Sexually focused counselling where there are issues relating to sex which do not need PST work.

I welcome heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender couples/individuals.

Counselling

I work integratively, integrating different theories and ways of working according to the issues presented by each individual client.

Issues worked are wide ranging but may include:

Exploring how present difficulties affect the client, and how to make changes which will lead to sustainable improvement.

Bereavement.

Low self esteem.

Work related issues.

Post traumatic stress.

Life stage issues.

Family issues (I am trained/experienced in family counselling).

Looking at how traumatic experiences from the past influence the present and how to accept and move on:

Childhood abuse.

Abusive relationships.

Supervision

I am an accredited supervisor for BASRT (British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapists).

I am a qualified supervisor having trained as a supervisor with Relate. I have supervised Relate therapists and counsellors since 2001.

I am on the Relate Register of Supervisors to supervise counselling, couple counselling, youth work, family counselling, and Psychosexual Therapy.

I am on the supervisor network for Leeds, Huddersfield and York Universities, Calderdale, Bradford and Oldham Colleges.

I supervise trained and experienced therapists and counsellors and trainees/students.

I facilitate case supervision groups and professional development groups.

Having initially trained in person centred counselling my further training has varied in theory base e.g. M.A. in integrative theory I therefore studied a variety of theories and how to integrate them; PST work is cognitive behavioural. Family work is systemic. Couple work integrative. I therefore am able to supervise according to the theory being used by my supervisee.

I have no problem if supervisees contact me between planned supervisions when needed. I make sure alternative support is available if I am on holiday and unavailable.

Confidentiality

All information shared is treated as confidential unless someone’s personal safety is at risk.

I adhere to BACP and BASRT codes of ethics and practice.

I hold an enhanced CRB certificate.

My counselling suite is purpose built, in a peaceful and private location.
