Volunteer at Cairns Festival

In 2016 the Cairns Festival will run from Friday 26 August - Sunday 4 September. Volunteer support at Cairns Festival is essential in making some of our city's BIGGEST community events a reality.

Volunteering is a great way to gain new experiences, meet new people and have a lot of fun.

Cairns Festival is seeking volunteers for the following roles

Esplanade Info Booth - 26 August to 4 September

It is vital to have a central point where people can get information about festival events and collect a Cairns Festival program.

The Esplanade Info booth will be manned 10am – 4pm on weekends and from 4pm-6pm on Weekdays.

Info Booth Volunteers are required to:

·  Be the public face of the Cairns Festival

·  Provide information to members of the public

o  General event information

o  Event start/finish times

o  Event locations

·  Hand out Cairns Festival programs

·  Answer questions

Grand Parade | Saturday 27 August 2016

Each year the Grand Parade attracts over 20,000 people to the Esplanade to watch one of Cairns’ biggest community events. In 2015 the Grand Parade had over 80 floats with approximately 3000 people participating in the parade itself.

There is a lot that happens behind the scenes to make this massive event possible. As a Grand Parade Volunteer you will play a key role in ensuring this is a successful and safe event.

There are multiple volunteer roles required on the day.

Volunteer roles include:

Registration Tent

·  Sign in floats as they arrive, supply with necessary safety information and their float number.

Float Preparation

·  Assist community groups with the construction of their floats and act as a liaison between the floats and the Grand Parade Marshals

Assistant Marshal

·  Grand Parade Marshals play a vital role in ensuring the safety of both parade participants and spectators. In this role you will provide directions to floats, walk with the floats in the Parade and then also assist and the end of the parade to help floats dismantle.

Sunday on the ‘Nard | Festival for Kids | Sunday 28 August 2016

Sunday on the ‘Nard is a full day of free family entertainment on the Esplanade. The Festival for Kids is held at Muddy’s playground from 9am-1pm and consists of free children’s art activities, children’s theatre and music.

The Cairns Festival needs activity assistants to assist the staff on the day. The tasks can include:

·  Assisting in the delivery of workshops and activities

·  Assisting with customer service, providing information to the public

·  Directing members of the public at events

This is a fun way to gain experience in delivering major events and children’s programming.

Carnival on Collins | Sunday 4 September

Carnival on Collins is the closing event for the Cairns Festival and attracts crowds of over 2000 people. It is a multifaceted day including over 200 market stalls, art exhibitions, children’s activities and live music throughout the precinct.

There are a number of volunteer positions available these include:

Market Install Assistant (early start 6am)

·  Guide stallholders to stall locations

·  Ensure all vehicles are travelling below 10km

·  Answer questions

Market Bump Out Assistant

·  Inform stall holders of bump out times

·  Ensure all vehicles are travelling below 10km

·  Answer Questions

Information and Counting Volunteers

·  Count people entering the event

·  Provide information to members of the public

o  General event information

o  Event/Performance start & finish times

o  Directions

·  Answer questions
