Café/Social Committee meeting

Present: Nancy Shapiro, Hilda Soo, Jessica Sterling-Malek, Luis Doffo (via phone), Ian Jaffee (via phone), Carol Berg (via phone), Jameson Miller (F&B), Nathaniel Parker (Café Mgr) and Curtis Lew (AGM).

Call to order: Shapiro called the meeting to order at 11:05 a.m.

Approval of minutes: Soo motioned to approve the January 13, 2017 minutes. Berg seconded the motion. All approve.

Food & Beverage Updates:

Financial: Shapiro said the January financial statements are not ready. Miller added a net loss will be expected in January due to vacations paid and recent rain storm creating swim programs to be held at another location for about a week.

Director Report: Miller said the core staff is in place but will be looking to hire more FOH and BOH staff. One candidate who currently works at the SF Yacht Club applied as a part time server here pending background check. Miller is working with webmaster Michelle on the Café menu. Miller said there will be more “Sides” offerings. In addition, Cobb Salad and Angus Beef Short Ribs will be added to the menu based on demand and popularity. Falafel will be dropped from the menu. Specials and Soups have been selling well.

Miller discussed tent options for the Café patio area. Miller will meet with a vendor later today but early numbers were as follows: 30’ x 50’ tent to cover trellis is $16K to rent for 3 months or $24K to purchase – including set up. Miller feels confident he can obtain additional gross income close to $100k/year if a tent is in place. Permit will be necessary. Miller & Shapiro working on proposal to present at March BOG meeting.

Miller said his FOH staff will wear uniformed tops and aprons soon.

Shapiro wanted to make sure the table tents were purchased. Lew purchased table tents and ready to be used. Shapiro said this should help café sales by putting café specials in the table tents.

Shapiro asked Miller and Parker to look for more interested volunteers to serve on the Café/Social Committee.

Social Club Events: Miller said approximately sixty five people signed up so far for this Sunday’s Super Bowl party (February 5th). He added the Café will be open for business as usual all day in addition to the buffet from 2 p.m. – 6p.m.

Miller will have a master calendar for all Social Club events in the website soon but asked for assistance. Discussion took place regarding the “Texas Hoedown and BBQ” event with line dancers and mechanical bull scheduled for Friday, June 16th. Sterling-Malek has line dancerconnection and will forward to Lew to follow up. Miller will slow cook a pig for this event.

Doffo suggested having a “Mother/Son Dance” since the typical dance is a Father/Daughter Dance. All thought this was a great idea and is scheduled for Friday, March 3rd, from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. with a maximum of 50 couples. This event will have DJ and Photo Booth. Miller will check with DJ. Lew will search for Photo Booth. Update: Event is set and advertised to members.

Other new events discussed were Comedy Night, Murder Mystery Dinner for adults only.

Café/Club Etiquette:Juliana is currently working on Junior Orientation packet where all juniors will be required to take. Shapiro asked the Committee to email Lew/Juliana for any suggestions.

A rack (on four wheels) for backpacks is ready for use in the Café. Update: working wells so far.

Shapiro discussed the Youth Activity Room. Lew will work with Maintenance staff to give the room a fresh look with new paint, tables and chairs for juniors to do homework after school. March 1st will be the Grand Opening with refreshments.Update: Room painted & furniture on order.

Art in the Café: Shapiro is working with Marine to post a calendar of art work for 2017, with each month showing a different theme.

Other Business: Miller said the Rotary Club hold their meetings here every Wednesday for lunch for approximately 15-20 people. Miller stated this is good to have community outreach.

Shapiro said she will work with the Tennis Committee to have another “Used Tennis Racquet Drive” with the Youth Tennis Advantage (YTA) organization.

Berg will look into “Bloom”, a volunteer-based nonprofit organization and will have this in Spring time.

Miller said this year’s ATP Challenger event will be held September 23 – October 1st. A welcome BBQ will be held on Saturday, September 23rd.
