Cabinet Confirms Siyabonga Gama As Transnet Group Chief Executive

CABINET CONFIRMS SIYABONGA GAMA AS TRANSNET GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Dear colleagues,

We wish to advise that the Minister of Public Enterprises, Ms Lynne Browne, today confirmed the Cabinet decision to appoint Mr Siyabonga Gama as Group Chief Executive at Transnet with immediate effect. This is for an initial period of five years.

Mr Gama has been at the helm as acting Group Chief Executive since April 2015. During his tenure, Siya impressed us with his determination to align operational and strategic aspects of the company, with special attention to efficiency and integration. He was the only recommended candidate of the Board.

Once the Board was confident of Siya’s suitability, it made a recommendation to the Shareholder Ministry, the Department of Public Enterprises, which in turn was submitted to Cabinet.

Siya is one of the longest-serving and most experienced members of the Transnet executive team and is well-known to all of us.

He joined the company 21 years ago and has proved himself to be an innovative, visionary and resourceful leader while rising through the ranks.

Before he agreed to act as Group Chief Executive, he led Transnet Freight Rail, our biggest division in terms of people, profit, investments and assets. He radically transformed Freight Rail from yearly losses averaging R21 million in 2005 to a R5,1 billion giant in profit during the last financial year of his leadership.

He also served as the first CE of the National Ports Authority, amongst other roles at Transnet. He is a seasoned, highly-regarded executive and globally recognised as South Africa’s leading expert in railways and ports operations.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and various qualifications in business leadership, management and operations. He completed the Trium Global MBA under the auspices of the London School of Economics, Stern Business School in New York and HEC Paris.

Siya assumes the mantle at a difficult and challenging time, not only for Transnet but for the country and the world economy.

We have the utmost confidence in Siya’s leadership and ability to galvanise all 60000 of our colleagues at Transnet. We expect him to redefine and reshape the core of our business to drive a forward-looking, innovative and customer-centric culture at Transnet.

My colleagues on the Board, the Group Executive Committee and every member of the Transnet family, wish to both thank and congratulate Siya for accepting this daunting task. He is guaranteed our unswerving and loyal support. Let us all wish him well in the role that the nation has entrusted in him.

We have no doubt that he will do us proud.

Sent on behalf of the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Ms Linda Mabaso.
