Reports to: Manager, Responsible Investment

The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation believe that responsible investors must have concern for environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors because they are material to long term returns.The Responsible Investment (RI) team develops and maintains the Guardians’ RI Framework to ensure that RI considerations are integrated into all investment decisions. The RIteam is a central resource for research and analysis onRI and ESG issues, and provides expert input into other teams through consultation, ESG due diligence and training. The RI team alsoprovides support to the Corporate Strategy team on RI communications and reporting.

Responsible Investment is part of the broader Investment Analysisteam that also includes Economics andInvestment Analysis,and works closely with the various investment execution and operations teams.

Core responsibilities:

  1. Contribute to the development and implementation of the RIFramework, including analysis on new investment opportunities, ESG issues and manager reviews.
  2. Contribute to the engagement, exclusion, portfolio monitoring and shareholder voting activities relating to Fund investments.
  3. Assist with the coordination of the RI secretariat for the Crown Financial Institutions (CFI).
  4. Assist Corporate Strategy on RI-related communications.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and use of all Guardians’ systems and processes, including those relating to risk management and compliance practices.
  6. Read, understand and comply with all Guardians’ policies andprocedures, including those relating to risk management and compliance practices.
  7. Champion the Guardians’ vision, values and constructive culture at all times.

Key tasks:

  1. Contribute to the development and maintenance of RI guidelines, procedures and rating tools and their integration with the investment framework.
  2. Update the monitoring list quarterly. Undertake ESG issues research, including when companies are identified by MSCI for breaching ESG standards.
  3. Generate the six monthly exclusion list for sign off by the Manager, Responsible Investment.
  4. Remain up-to-date and build institutional knowledge of global and emerging RI research, opportunities, risks and practice.
  5. Integrate ESG considerations into investment decisionmaking by supporting and training other teams.
  6. Provide input into risk assessments, due diligence and post-investment monitoring as required.
  7. Participate in, and present to, internal Investment and Risk Committees as required.
  8. Assist with CFI quarterly RI Meetings including a first draft of meeting minutes and coordinating the timely production of high quality papers.
  9. Develop relationships with peers, membership organisations and other relevant external parties.
  10. Support other Guardians’ activities as required.
