Dear Legal Studies Teacher

MARINO LEGAL STUDIES AWARDS - 2017

Schools have the opportunity to nominate students from the Legal Studies and other associated subjects for the Marino Moller Legal Studies Awards.

The Marino Legal Studies Awards is a joint initiative of the Business Liaison Association and Marino Lawyers.

Details of the Marino Legal Studies Awards are as follows:

AIM OF THE AWARDS

  1. Provide an incentive for students who wish to seek a professional career in the law.
  2. Promote and recognize the legal professional.
  3. Enhance the study of Legal Studies, and
  4. Promote an awareness of the qualities and skills that are essential for a successful legal professional.

ELIGIBILITY

Year 12 secondary students seeking a career in Law OR furthering their education in this field at a Tertiary institution (e.g. Bachelor of Laws). Students do not currently have to be studying Legal Studies but must intend to pursue a career in this field after finishing high school.

Level of Achievement in relevant subjects – Very High Achievement/High Achievement

Attitude

Personality

Interest in the Vocation (otherwise disqualified)

Presentation

NOMINATIONS

$82.50 (incl. GST) PER SCHOOL (not per entrant). Following registration, the BLA will forward a Tax Invoice.

No limit to the number of entrants.

Nomination Fee. ALL SCHOOLS WILL BE SENT A TAX INVOICE FOR REGISTRATION FEE.

Cheques payable to the Business Liaison Association.

Completed Nominations are to be mailed or emailed to Sacha McCloskeyby Friday, 6 October 2017 otherwise they will not be considered.

Teachers are required to copy the attached Nomination Form and distribute to interested students who meet the eligibility criteria. Completed applications should be computer-generated and checked for ACCURACY, GRAMMAR AND PRESENTATION.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

All winners of awards MUST ATTEND the Official Presentation at the Pullman International Hotel on29 November 2017, commencing at 5.30 pm.

SELECTION

The selection procedure this year will consist of:

  1. Short-listing students from the nomination forms.
  1. Schools will be advised of the students who have been short-listed so that those students may prepare themselves for the interview process.
  1. Interviews will be conducted from 9.00am on Saturday 21 October 2017 in Cairns. Some interviews may be able to take place late afternoon on the following Monday. The interview panel is made up of two lawyers from Marino Lawyers - Mr Charlie Marino and Ms Christine Ross.

THE INTERVIEW

At the interview, the students will be required to:

Complete an application form on arrival

Present his/her Curriculum Vitae. Make sure you include only copies of relevant certificates, awards etc. (not originals) as these will not be returned.

Answer a series of questions from the panel.

Demonstrate appropriate personal presentation and communication skills (NB. Formal School Uniform must be worn)

All students short-listed and interviewed will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Panel’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. All interviews will take place at the allocated time – no other date is possible. Teleconferencing can be arranged, but costs must be met by the applicant or the school.

Your completed nomination form must be typed and checked for accuracy and grammar.

Please attach a word processed statement, which addresses the following:

  1. Explain the importance of an organisation such as Marino Lawyers, in relation to the legal professional. (Use web site for information or any other data source)
  2. Briefly describe your future career aspirations.
  3. Briefly describe your major strengths and personal abilities.
  4. List any major achievements or highlights in your life.
  5. If you were to win the $800 Marino Legal Studies Award, how would you make use of this?
  6. What steps have you taken to prepare yourself as a legal professional?
  7. What responsibilities and/or duties do you envisage any such position to include?
