BACKGROUND

ChicagoUnitedlaunchedtheinauguralissueoftheBusinessLeadersofColorpublicationin2003.Thepublicationfeaturesaccomplishedcorporateandcivicleaderswhohaveachievedsuccessascorporateexecutivesandentrepreneursandwhoaretruecivicleaders.

ChicagoUnited developedtheBusinessLeadersofColor publication in directresponseto research data from itsbiennialCorporateDiversityProfile.ThestudymeasurestherepresentationofpeopleofcolorincorporateleadershipintheboardroomsandexecutivesuitesofChicagocorporations.Theresearchreflectsanongoingunderrepresentationofleadersofcolorrelativetotheavailabletalentpool.

WeknowthatbusinesssuccessinChicago,asinmostcities,greatlydependsonpersonalrelationshipsandinformalnetworks.Tostrengthentheopportunitytodevelopandnourishthesenetworksforleadersofcolor,ChicagoUnitedcreatedtheBusinessLeadersofColorpublication.

Thepublicationiscontinuallymetwithenthusiasm,bothfromcorporationsandfromtheminoritybusinesscommunity.ThepublicationservesasavehicleforintroducingtalentedleadersintoChicago’sbusinessnetworks,aswellasaresourcefororganizationsseeking toincreaseinclusionofdiverseboardcandidates.

We encourageyou toreview thediverse talent inyourorganization,inyournetworkofbusinessassociates,andinthecorporateand/orcivicboardsonwhichyouserve.Uponidentifyingbusinessleadersofcolorwhomeetthecriteria,pleasesubmittheirnamesandcontactinformationfornominationforChicagoUnited’sBusinessLeadersofColorpublication.

ChicagoUnitedislookingforwardtopublishingthenextBusinessLeadersofColorpublication.Yourparticipationinthenominationprocesswillhelptoensurethatthispublicationisasuccess.Pleasereviewthefollowingcriteriacarefullyasyouselectyournominee(s).We encourageyoutoeithercompletetheattachedformforyournominee(s)orforward thenominationformtothenominee(s)forcompletion.AnotheroptionwouldbeforChicagoUnitedtoforwardthenominationformtoyournominee(s),notingyouastheirnominator,and requestingthattheyprovidecompletednominationinformation.

1.Nomineeisanindividualofcolor(AfricanAmerican,AsianAmerican/Pacific Islander,Hispanic,orNativeAmerican).

2.Nomineeiscurrentlyorhasrecentlybeenprofessionallyactiveinthecorporate/businessarenawithintheChicagoMetropolitanAreaSixCountySMSA(Cook, DuPage,Kane,Lake,McHenryand WillCounties). Individualswhohaveexperiencesolelyinthecivic,education,ornonprofit arenaorwhoarelocatedoutside thesixCountySMSAwillnot beconsidered.

ClarificationofCriteria2:

•Nomineeiscurrentlyorhasrecentlybeenprofessionallyactiveinthecorporate/businessarena:Certainlymajorinstitutionssuchashospitalsanduniversitiesare“largebusinesses”and theseniorleadersof thoseinstitutionsareindeedoperatinginabusinesscapacity.Therefore,theCEO,COO,generalcounsel,CFO,CIOareexamplesofexcellentcandidates.Therolesofuniversitydepartment chair,dean,ormedicalchiefofstaff,althoughprestigious,wouldnotbeconsideredabusinessroleandwouldfalloutsideof theguidelines.

•Individualswhohaveexperiencesolelyinthecivic,education,ornonprofitarena:Herethephrase “experiencesolely”guidesusinourthinkingabouttheindividual.Aneducator/teacher/professormaynotbeappropriate.However,anomineewhoisa professor whoalsorunshis/her own independentbusinessesasan entrepreneur isnot“solely”an educator.

5.ItisrecommendedthattheNomineecurrentlyserveasadirectoronatleasttwo(2)boardsofdirectorsforcorporate,civic,ornonprofitorganizations.Nomineeshouldhave experience onatleastone(1)nonprofitboard.Anomineewithno previousboardexperiencewillnot beconsidered.

6.Nomineemusthavedemonstratedstrongleadershipskillswithintheirorganization(e.g.,vision,strategy,changeleadership,etc.)as wellassignificantcommunity/civicinvolvement(specialoruniqueprojects)andmusthavedemonstratedleadershipinsupportofthedevelopmentofotherminoritytalent(e.g.,mentoring)withintheirorganizations.

7.Nomineehashadabroadrangeofexperiencesandhasaproventrackrecordofdemonstratedsuccessintransitioningintovariousanddifferentroles, e.g., fromanindividualcontributorroleintomanagement, fromanationaltointernationalassignment,fromonefunctionalareatoanother,fromastaffpositiontoa“line”position(PLresponsibility),etc.Nomineeisabletoeffectivelybringabroadperspectivetonarrowissuesandtopicsandhasdemonstratedskillinleadingsuccessfulteams.
