Business Development Manager at Continental Tyre Group, John Morgan, has been trading in four tyres for two to raise funds for a very worthy Irish charity.
The 46-year-old father of three, from Douglas in Cork, has raised over €35,000 for The Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) over the past ten years by participating in four of the charity’s challenge cycles andalso pounding the pavement in a number of marathons.
The Irish Hospice Foundation is a national charity dedicated to all matters relating to dying, death and bereavement in Ireland. The charity received no core state funding and relies on the generosity of the public to support its work as it strives for the best care at end of life for all.
Research undertaken by The IHF in 2014 revealed that 74% of Irish people would choose to die at home if given a choice, but only 26% actually get to do so at present.
The IHF’s Nurses for Night Care service provides free nursing care in the home to people with illnesses other than cancer who are at the end of their lives. This service enables more people to fulfil their wish to die at home with dignity.Demand for this service is increasing and in 2015 the IHF will spend approximately €600,000 providing 1,800 nights of nursing care.
John has sadly experienced the death of close family members and friends and the work of The Irish HospiceFoundation is therefore very close to his heart.
He said,”I have been supporting the Nurse for Night Care service for the last four years by participating in their annual Cycle Challenge.I have cycled with a group of 60 individuals across many countries including France, Spain and Italy raising vital funds for this worthy cause. Each year I have covered an average of 700 kilometres, taking on some serious mountains, heatwaves and difficult terrain. But the satisfaction you get when you reach the finish line is just priceless!
“I like many others have sadly lost family and friends so that is why The Irish Hospice Foundation is a cause close to my heart and one I am happy to support,” he added.
John has had great support from his colleagues at Continental and the people of Cork who have always been generous in their support of his fundraising efforts.
“Thank you to all who have supported me over the years – together we can make a difference. I’ll be back in the saddle for the 2016 Challenge Cycle and would encourage more people to join in and support the work of The Irish Hospice Foundation by participating in this event.”
