Business & Agriculture

B1: The business and agriculture community provides input and resources in the development and implementation of the Iowans Fit For Life (IFFL) Initiative.

Outcome Measure: Business and agriculture groups support the IFFL marketing and communications plan through cooperative efforts and/or their own marketing and communications efforts (this means they can support a direct IFFL activity, or incorporate one of our messages in their own advertising – food page ads, etc.)

1.1Develop a Business and Agriculture Advisory Committee

1.1.1Develop strategy to support IFFL efforts by utilizing key messages that fit individual business and ag group objectives

1.1.2Utilize consumer marketing research to support key messages to change behavior

1.2Recruit partners from the Business and Agriculture Community who will participate and commit to the IFFL initiative via social marketing efforts and providing resources.

1.2.1Develop / discuss criteria for partnership efforts including key messages to promote.

1.2.2Coordinate education / marketing efforts from business and ag with IFFL “coordination team” (whoever is the core team in charge)

B2: Develop healthy local food systems in at least three intervention communities which 1) produce healthy foods meeting the USDA dietary guidelines; 2) support agricultural practices producing a healthy environment for Iowans to live; and 3) support Iowa farmers

Outcome Measure: Three communities are identified and actively building healthier communities through a healthy food system based on food policies which are developed to address identified issues.

2.1Determine Regional Food System Changes Needed that Expand the Local Resources for Healthy Foods.

2.1.1The Local Community will do a Food System Assessment Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses of the regional food system

2.2 Develop and Implement a Community Plan based on the Food System Assessment that institutes policies in the intervention communities which:

2.2.1Increase healthy local food purchasing/production by 50% of the Community to 10% of their total food consumed

2.2.2Increase local food purchasing/production by at least one state institution to a minimum of 20% total food consumed

2.2.3Increase local food purchasing/production by at

least two food service businesses to at least 20% total food consumed

2.2.4 Increase number of farmers by 100% who are producing a variety of healthy foods which support a regional food system and healthy environment

2.2.5 Develop at least one food processing business which uses 50% of inputs from local producers

2.3Evaluate and publicize best practices models from the community pilots

B3: Build a Public Policy Approach to a Healthier Food System

Outcome Measure: A workgroup is in place with a mission of instituting public policy to improve health through healthy food systems.

3.1 Develop work groups with identified partners to work with the Iowa Food

Policy Council to develop policy recommendations to improve Iowa’s food

systems and food environment

3.2 Develop Iowa Food Policy Council specialized Technical Assistance for communities and the state to develop policies to design and build healthy community food systems and food environments.
