BUSC Main Event 2010 – Alpe D’Huez
27th March – 3rd April
Competitions Entry Information
This year sees the BUSC Main Event return to Alpe D’huez, France.
The world class floodlit racing Stade and BUSC custom designed Snowpark will again provide an exceptional arena to host the 2010 championships. With both finishing in the heart of the high altitude village, the compact nature of the resort will ensure that all who stay will become absorbed in the excitement of the biggest event in the British Universities Snowsports calendar.
The race piste in Alpe D’Huez is widely regarded as one of the best in France and is therefore a perfect venue for our competitions.
So far this year BUSC competitions have attracted record numbers of entries and with ever increasing standards; the Main Event will be just as thrilling for spectators and competitors alike!

Westbeach Peak to Creek
A fun competition to be held on the final day of the week to prove who is - The greatest on snow @ BUSC!
Open to both skiers and boarders this race starts at the top and finishes at the bottom; that is the very top all the way to the centre of town. Simple format – first one to make it down the series of jumps, tunnels, bridges.... wins!
Entries for the Peak to Creek event will be taken in resort.
STAR RACERS
Due to its success last year, we will be once again implementing the STAR RACER system.
On Sunday 28th March there will be a one run Giant Slalom to qualify skiers for the main races. This is due to the vast quantity of racers entered. Any skier with a valid FIS license or those registered as BASS seeded skiers automatically qualify for the main races.
Star racers are your University’s best skier who does not hold a FIS license or BASS registration.
The advantage that the STAR racer has is a better start number in the qualification race – it does not mean automatic qualification. The STAR system allows your best racers to have a better bib number in the qualifying race and so greater chance of qualifying for the BUCS races.
The running order in the main races will be FIS/BASS racers followed by the main field (ordered from qualification race). Star racers have no advantage in the main races.
Ski Race
When entering people into the ski racing, all seeded racers automatically qualify to compete in Slalom and Giant Slalom. All other remaining entrants will be required to do a qualifying run on the Sunday.
Those who qualify will then be entered into the Slalom and Giant Slalom. Qualification for the Super-G will be done through the Giant Slalom results as the race jury will re-consider any racer deemed not of the right standard to race Super-G safely.
Everyone must wear helmets in the races as they will conform to the latest FIS rules.
Board Race
All entrants qualify for a two-run Giant Slalom and Head-to-Head Slalom knock out.
Freestyle
As in all BUSC freestyle competitions – a two hour JAM session will be followed by an eight person final.
During the JAM session competitors are free to hit the course as many times as they like with their best run to count for qualification.
Skier/Boarder-X
Conforming to FIS rules - all competitors are required to inspect the course and perform a training run prior to completing a qualification run.
This qualification then seeds competitors for the knock out stages.
Team Duals
Tuesday night is Party on the Piste including Team Dual Slaloms
The floodlit race Stade lights up the village to form an epic spectacle for all to see.
The Big Air Super Final and Red Bulll King of Bob will also take place at Party on the Piste and free Vin Chaud should help encourage spectators from your University to come down and support all those on show!
The Entry Form
The form is incredibly simple to fill in, to save confusion the worksheets are locked for editing except for the highlighted blue cells; these are the only parts you will need to use. There are multiple tabs across the bottom of the workbook; each tab represents a discipline with the final two having the invoice and insurance details. Use the pink highlighted examples as a guide to ensure that the forms are filled in correctly; this also saves us time because we won’t need to reformat them all.
How to complete the Form:
1. Go to the invoice tab and fill in your University and personal details; these are essential for our information should we need to contact you. Once these boxes are filled in they will automatically be copied across the workbook to all other sheets.
2. Go through the rest of the worksheets and fill out the details of the competitors you wish to enter. Please ensure that you fill out all of the details correctly as per the example on each sheet.
3. This year we are continuing with the STAR racer format for the ski racing; this is the top un-seeded male and female ski racer from each University.
4. Double check that you have filled in the correct competitors in the correct discipline. Please ensure that you provide a student number; it is unacceptable to have people competing either for their old university or one other than their own. ID numbers helps us ensure that BUCS points are allocated correctly.
5. INSURANCE – IMPORTANT! Go to the insurance sheet; on this page please fill in the details of ALL of the competitors you are entering at Main Event; this includes anyone who is only entering the dual slalom.
All competitors must have ticked the free insurance option when booking the Main Event – the additional £10 fee upgrades this basic insurance to full cover for competitions. Competitors with their own competitions insurance must provide details of their cover to BUSC before they are allowed to compete. Please note that the £10 race insurance upgrade only applies to insurance provided through ETC, it may not be used to upgrade insurance from any third party provider.
6. Go to the invoice sheet and double check that all the values have copied through correctly, once you are satisfied please email a copy across to and .
The invoice page should be printed off as payment reference for the club or to be presented to the sports union for payment to be organised. If you require a separate invoice to be sent to the union please contact asap.
7. Once payment has been organised the form should be signed and posted to the BUSC office. The address of which is:
BUSC office,
9 Hamilton Drive,
The Park,
Nottingham,
NG7 1DF
8. Please ‘SAVE AS’ your university’s name. The file you will be sent will be MAIN EVENT ENTRY FORM.doc. Change it to, e.g., MAIN EVENT ENTRY FORM- EDINBURGH.doc. This helps to ensure that all your entries are included on the start lists. Please ensure entries are in before the deadline of SUNDAY 17th MARCH.
9. On arrivals day in Alpe D’Huez, please come see Joe at the BUSC office in the Palais des Sports to check all entries have been processed correctly and make any emergency changes.
Notes
· Combo of Comps. We will enter your competitors into all race events and/or all freestyle events. There is no reduction if they only plan on doing one of the events (e.g. just the GS race or just the Big Air).
· Get it right!! Corrections will be possible, but are a bit of a nightmare. If you want to make corrections after the entry deadline, you will have to pay the late entry fee (unless it is clearly our fault).
· Late entries. We will consider taking late entries after the entry deadline. This will be totally at the discretion of the Competitions Director. We reserve the right to refuse late entries, regardless of circumstances. We may also choose to accept some late entries, but refuse others. The cost of a late entry will be £10 per person per event.
Special Circumstances
We endeavour to be as flexible and inclusive as possible when it comes to entries for competitions. If you foresee that you are going to have a problem getting your entry in by the deadline, please let us know as soon as possible.
