Burnley Health Care NHS Trust provides a caring service to a population of approximately 242,000 within the Boroughs of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.

  • Situated in North East Lancashire with excellent motorway links, and with its rural backdrop and surrounding hills, Burnley is a very friendly and welcoming place to live and work.
  • A large 850 bedded district general hospital, Burnley General has undergone considerable development and refurbishment, and further major works are going ahead. There is an extensive range of educational facilities available in the Mackenzie Medical Postgraduate Centre with a well-stocked library and CD Rom search facilities, and we have an excellent staff restaurant, which offers a variety of food, including special diets and out of hours catering facilities.
  • There are a wide range of sporting activities available locally in the William Thompson Centre and Burnley Football Club, a selection of local theatres, pubs and clubs, a working museum reflecting Burnley's past association with 'King Cotton', and two stately homes!
  • You will have every support during your placement and the opportunity for plenty of clinical experience, and we very much look forward to seeing you in Burnley.

PENDLE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

A small 72-bedded hospital, Pendle Community was opened in 1991 and forms part of Burnley Health Care Trust. It provides a wide range of services for the population of Pendle, including in patient facilities for GP patients and for Medicine for the Elderly. In addition, there is an out patient department, day hospital and rehabilitation department.

Pendle Community Hospital is situated in Nelson, part of the Borough of Pendle, and is three miles from Burnley General Hospital. It can be reached from the M65, Junction 13 or via the A56.

ROSSENDALE GENERAL HOSPITAL

A medium-sized 166 bedded General Hospital providing a much appreciated local facility for the Borough of Rossendale. The Hospital provides a wide range of out patient, day patient, x-ray and rehabilitation services. The principal in patient facilities are in the specialities of psychiatry, medicine for the elderly, general medicine and surgery.

Ten miles from Burnley General, Rossendale General can be reached via the M65 and M66 motorways.

GENERAL DETAILS

Hepatitis B Certificate

Occupational Health Department may require proof of Hep B immunisation on day of arrival. You must obtain this yourself from the Occupational Health Department at Hope Hospital as they will not allow this information to be released to the Undergraduate Department.

IT Facilities

Three computers sited within the Mackenzie Medical Centre Library. Two have 24 access and free Internet and e-mail facilities after 17.00 hours (using Windows 95 and NHS NowNet). An additional internet facility is available at a cost of £2.00 per half hour and this computer uses Windows 3.11 and Turnpike version 1.11.

Post

All post addressed to medical students will be delivered to Helen Stobbs, Postgraduate Centre Manager, Burnley General, and can be collected from there.

Phone

There are payphones on each floor of your accommodation (Cuplan House) and situated throughout the hospital. The hospital also has its own pre-paid phone cards. These can be purchased between 09.00 - 17.00 hours from the hospital switchboard and cost from £2.00 to £20.00 (please have the correct money).

Catering

The hospital dining room is a self-service cafeteria which offers a wide range of meals and snacks. There is also a vending machine in the Doctors' Residence (plus a games room and Pool table). A key for the Doctors' Residence is available from the Accommodation Officer or Mess President.

Shops and Cashpoint

There is a shop and cafeteria for patients and staff in the hospital grounds and quite a few shops, supermarkets and pubs close by. You are about a mile from Burnley's shopping centre. Your nearest cashpoint is a couple of hundred yards away at the Briercliffe Shopping Centre (turn right when leaving the main hospital entrance).

Car Parking

There are six Pay and Display car parks throughout Burnley General Hospital, students park free

Car parking at Pendle Community Hospital is free but limited.

Security

For security reasons you are required to wear an ID badge over the period of your placement. These can be obtained from the General Office in Trust Headquarters at Burnley General Hospital between 10.00 and 11.00 hours or 14.00 and 15.00 hours (except Monday mornings and Friday afternoons). Please take some form of identity along with you.

A pack containing the above information, and more, will be waiting for you on your arrival.

Accommodation

Those students on Module One of Year 5 should be able to move into their accommodation over the weekend prior to commencing the Module. Please contact the Accommodation Officer to confirm exactly when you will be moving in. Thereafter, change over day for accommodation will always be the last day of the placement. No deposit is required for the room but you will need to heave a £10.00 deposit for the room key. You must vacate your accommodation by 10.00 hours to enable the rooms to be cleaned ready for the next students to move in after 15.00 hours on the same day. Please make sure you return all room keys / swipe cards before you leave and leave the accommodation as you found it.
