11Buffaloaresegregatedaccordingtotheirclass
andsize;generalhealth,levelofaggression;
andthenatureof thejourneytominimiseriskstotheirwelfare.
12Buffaloarehandledappropriatelyand
competently. Theyare:
•notliftedbyonlythehead,ears,horns, neck, tailor hair;or
•notliftedoffthegroundbyasingleleg, unlesstheyweighlessthan15kgs
•supportedandsecuredif liftedmechanically;
•notthrownordropped;
•notunreasonablystruck,punchedorkicked;
•not dragged if theycan’tstand,(except for emergencyhandling,lifting, treatmentor destruction).
Notes
•Ifbuffaloarespelledforthedurationstated inthetableabove,thetransportprocessis deemedto becompletedandanother transportprocesscanbeundertaken.
•If buffalo are unloadedand providedwith water for lessthan 4 hours, theirtime off water,isnotreduced.
•Ifwateris providedforbetween4and24 hours,thetimeforwhichsuchaccesswas providedis deductedfromthetimeoffwater.
•Thetimeoffwateris calculatedbyadding:
assemblytime;timeinaholdingfacilityprior toloading;loading;timeonavehicle; unloading;holdinginahandlingfacility duringtransitorata destinationuntilwater
isprovided.
16Timeoffwaterminimisesriskstobuffaloand
takesinto account:
•increased riskof journeys closeto the maximumtimeoffwater;
•assessmentthatthebuffaloarefitforthe remainderofthejourney;
•climaticconditions,especiallyheatorcold;
•theclassof buffalo, especiallyif weak, pregnant,recentlyhavinggivenbirth, lactatingor immature;and
•thenatureoftheintendedjourney
17Intheabsenceofrecords,onarrivalattheir
destination,buffaloarewateredwithinthe
maximumtimeoffwaterfortheirclassand,if theirmaximumtimeoffwaterisreached,
spelledbeforecommencinganotherjourney

18Ifabuffaloiskilled,itisdoneinamanner
whichresultsinrapidlossofconsciousness
followedbydeathwhileunconscious
19Buffaloarekilledbyapersonwhoiscompetent
in themethodof killing. If thereisno
competentpersonavailableandthepersonin chargeofthebuffaloatthetimeconsiders
thatheiscapableofkillingithumanelyandif it isin the welfareinterest of the buffalo, he maykillit.
20Weak,illor injuredbuffaloareidentifiedto thereceiverandseparatedforrestandrecovery, treatment,orhumanedestructionpromptly.
21Abuffalowhichhasbeenkilledischeckedto
ensurethatit isdead
22Buffaloarenotkilledusingblunttraumaorby
cuttingtheirthroats.
DURINGTHE JOURNEY

•on the vehicle before departure;and
•withinthefirsthourof thejourney;and
•atleastevery3hoursorateachdriverrest stop,whichevercomesfirst,to assessthe buffaloasbeingfitforthejourney
•each time the vehicle stopsfora change of driver orvehicle;and
•at unloading;.
