Dear Coach, Sensei or Captain

Thank you for supporting the annual BUSA karate championships. This letter is to outline some of the rules and format we will be using in this years championship, as well as clarifying issues from previous years.

As is now the norm, we will be using the rules of the WKF (World karate federation). The rationale is that these are the rules that are now accepted by the IOC, and are used at World University level.

Please note the rules and requirements below, and prepare your competitors accordingly.

KATA

7th to 4th kyu……Pinan/Heian kata only. Competitors will be expected to know a minimum of two kata, but will not be allowed to repeat a kata consecutively (including the final). They may alternate between any of the five pinan/heian kata as they wish or between the minimum two.

3rd to 1st kyu (brown belt kata) only the following kata may be performed. Competitors may repeat any kata only once but not consecutively. The number of kata a finalist will need will depend on the entry, but a minimum three kata should be sufficient. If the entry is unusually large we will review the situation prior to the event

Bassai dai (Passai)

Saifa

Seienchin (Seiyunchin)

Juroku (Seiru)

Matsukaze (Wankan)

Shio-kosokun

Tekki Shodan (Naihanchin Shodan or Naifanchin)

Gekiai dai Ichi or Ni

Heian or Pinan kata’s

Blackbelt Kata.

We will be using the full rules of the WKF. Therefore in the first two rounds competitors must select from the eight official shitei katas (seienchin, bassai dai, saifa, seipai, seishan, chinto, kanku dai, jion) listed and perform them as prescribed by the WKF. Association and style variations are not allowed and will result in disqualification.

Please note that there is no longer any such thing as a preliminary round. Therefore if you have a competitor who has a bye in the first round, then that competitor will only need to perform one shitei kata

Repeating of a kata, once performed, is NOT allowed at any point, including the final and the repercharge. If a competitor repeats any kata they will be disqualified.

Team Kata

This event will follow the same rules as the blackbelt kata. However, as stated last year we will be incorporating the full rules. Therefore the two finalists will be required to perform bunkai (applications) as per WKF regulations. Teams will be given a maximum of 5 minutes for the bunkai, the time beginning from the final bow of the kata performance. The bunkai is judged as part of the decision making process.

Should a team make the final and have not prepared bunkai, they will be disqualified and may be given shikkaku (barred from the tournament). They will not receive any medal or placing.

N.B. For those who are new to the competition or who are not familiar with WKF rules please note that shitei kata must be performed as prescribed by the WKF, and the kata must be in the kihon (basics) of the style they represent.

KUMITE

As is now the norm full WKF rules will apply. Competitors will be required to wear red (aka) or Blue (ao) belts, and the corresponding coloured mitts, according to their side of the draw.White mitts will NOT be allowed.

COMPETITORS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT. NO BELTS OR MITTS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE DAY.

Gum shields are compulsory. Groin guards and ladies chest protectors are advised

Male individual bouts will be 3 minutes, Women and junior grade 2minutes (though we reserve the right to review this on the day should time become an issue)

It is the responsibility of the coaches and captains to ensure their competitors know the rules. The small number of disputes we had last year was largely because competitors did not know the rules.

______

This is a karate event. All competitors must have a valid karate licence issued by a British Association and be graded in the discipline. Further, to ensure fair play, all quarter finalists will have their licences checked as well as their student ID (NUS cards are not acceptable). Failure to do so may result in that competitor being disqualified and could result n the whole squad of that university being disqualified.

Finally, there have been requests for us to organise a kata course and rules meeting as we did last year. If you are interested in such a course please contact the email below or Lucy Crickmore at BUSA’s offices and we will gauge if there is sufficient demand. Such a course will cost around £15 per head. Please only register your interest if you are making a definite commitment.

You must register your interest immediately, and we will endeavour to run the course in mid January 2005.

If you have any queries or concerns please contact me on

The BUSA karate championships continue to grow. We are now a well-established major national championship. Further we are an established sport in the University international calendar, having sent a squad to the 2004 World University Championships in Belgrade, collecting two bronze and one silver medal, and in the top eight for most events we entered.

With your continued support and input I am confident we can progress further and elevate sport karate to highest levels.

We look forward to an exciting and enjoyable days competition. Good luck in your preparations and on the day.

Yours faithfully

Steve Coupland

(Chair BUSA karate sports management group)
