About the National Academy (Scotland) Summer Camp 2012

Where is it?

We are pleased to announce the July summer camp which will be in SportScotland’s excellent residential Inverclyde Sports Centre in Largs. More details about the venue here http://www.nationalcentreinverclyde.org.uk/Home

What is it?

A fantastic opportunity to be part of an LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) initiative seeking to give Scottish fencers the education and skills they need to reach their full potential as successful senior athletes. Training includes dedicated weapon coaches, strength & conditioning experts and the use of technology such as video to enhance performance.

Who is it for?

The National Academy is for fencers whose birthday is from 1994-1998, and the athletes are expected to commit to the programme, attending as many National Academy events as possible. Fencers who are a little younger than the age band above can be accepted on to the regional programme (non-residential training days but not the residential camp), but only where their coach declares them to be developmentally ahead of their age-group (both physically and in fencing terms), and at the discretion of the lead coach (Don McKenzie).

Background

Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a holistic training and education framework which seeks to give British fencers the education and skills they need to reach their full potential as successful senior athletes. The National Academy is the catalyst for British Fencing to achieve this.

The formal launch of the British Fencing National Academy took place in 2010 with 2 pilot training days and a residential week at Nottingham Trent University. Over 100 fencers and 70 staff were involved. The programme has now expanded to include 6 regional centres and is supported by the AASE and TASS programmes.

The National Academy has been established to deliver British Fencing’s vision of becoming a “world leading fencing family”, and has three areas of focus:

• Talent Development

• Workforce Development

• Club Development

With the development of National Academy Regional centres we have now developed a programme which will start to roll out nationwide over the next few years. It will deliver support to fencers, coaches and parents through a national and regional framework and in time will have support through a “virtual National Academy” with online resources.

The National Academy brings together world leading experts in a range of fields such as psychology, strength and conditioning, injury prevention, recovery, physiotherapy, nutrition whilst balancing education with sport and planning, to achieve the aim of producing successful senior International fencers.

The LTAD document for British Fencing is available on the British Fencing web site at www.britishfencing.com/academy/ltad/ .
