Foil – La Rochelle

We have now secured accommodation at a Youth Hostel, details on their web site at www.fuaj-aj-larochelle.fr. This has suitable accommodation for our group and will provide full board and packed lunches each day.

We have been in touch with the local fencing club (whose salle we are using) and they will have local club fencers joining us for the training. These are not national team but should be of suitable standard to be effective sparring partners.

The exact number of coaches we take to the training camp will depend on the number of fencers who are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. They will all be coaches who have worked on the British Fencing National Academy sessions this season and will be from: Glen Golding, Pierre Harper, and Ken Rose. Lynne Melia will be Chef de Mission for the trip.

Sabre and Epee – Rome

As you will know the accommodation is onsite at the training venue for this group. This has suitable accommodation for our group and will provide full board and packed lunches each day.

We are still in the process of confirming exactly who the sparring partners will be for this. They are unlikely to be national team but we will wait to confirm they will be of suitable standard to be effective sparring partners before confirming with all invited fencers.

The exact number of coaches we take to the training camp will depend on the number of fencers who are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity. They will all be coaches who have worked on the British Fencing National Academy sessions this season and will be from: Alex Agrenich, Sue Benney, Jamie Miller, Rob Partridge, Pavel Rynes, Phil Shepherd-Foster, and Jes Smith. Neil Brown will be Chef de Mission for the trip.

The deadline for applications for the epee and sabre trip will now be extended by a week to the 30th October.

Both these trips will allow fencers to complete part of their AASE qualification (fencers who are doing AASE but cannot make this trip will be able to complete similar work later in the year).

Fencers intending to go to either of these training camps should complete & return 2 documents on the British Fencing web site. On the youth trips page (http://www.britishfencing.com/international/youthtrips/) there are 2 forms to be returned:-

Fencers Annual Agreement (this only needs to be done once for the season, covers all National Academy events & British Fencing international trips)

Fencer Information Form, this needs to be completed for each trip or National Academy event.

Original information

The National Academy has organised international training camps between Christmas and New Year. These will be in La Rochelle for foilists and in Rome for epeeists and sabreurs. This training is for National Academy fencers born 94-97 and fencers who are part of the TASS programme. Spaces will be limited to 20 fencers per weapon. You are now invited to apply to attend this camp. Details on page 3 of this letter.

This training has been introduced to allow our talented young fencers to get good experience of fencing against a variety of international opponents. Traditionally fencers have gone to competitions for this experience, however experience has shown that many fencers get a very limited number of fights (sometimes as few as 5) for events that often cost over £400 for a weekend. This international training camp will allow fencers to get much more experience of training against international fencers with good coaching support for a similar cost.

For this season, 2011-12, the International Youth Committee has reduced the number of events the top cadets will be selected for. One of the reasons was to allow fencers to spend their limited funds on more effective international experience and these training camps are part of that process. For more information please see the international cadet fencing communiqué on the British Fencing web site at http://www.britishfencing.com/international/selections_and_rankings/cadet_and_junior_selection/

A limited number of fencers will be invited to join this training, selected by their national ranking after the British U20 and U17 Championships. A full list of these fencers is available in appendix 1 of this letter.
