Principal’s News

/ Around Bris this week
WORKING BEE: TOMORROW, 12th NOVEMBER, 9-11, followed by a General Meeting and shared lunch 11-1:30pm. We will be discussing 2012 school fees and other issues – see emailed agenda. Please come along. Our school needs a good clean ready for next year. We need lots of helpers, as there is much to do. We will not be sewing the curtains tomorrow but still need lots of hands with buckets and rags for cleaning. Some long handled cobweb brushes (exterior) would be really useful. All kids welcome. Please bring something for a shared lunch.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Lee Ponder for being our outstanding Executive CommitteeSecretary this year. Lee is no longer able to continue in this role, so we urgently need someone who can take minutes and organise paperwork/emails for our monthly meetings until our AGM in Term 1, 2012. Please contact the office if you can help.
Outstanding Fees: We still have $55 000 in outstanding fees. This money is urgently needed to improve our school. Please address your account as a matter of urgency.
Staff Work: On Thursday, our teachers worked hard all day in designing a great school program for next year. There will be a big focus next year on improving writing and maths as these were our lowest scores on the Naplan test. Also, more science, technology and of course workshops and another great camp! Get ready for a great 2012.
Hidden Talents: Good luck Mark (High School Teacher Aide) with your Art exhibition this weekend. Mark makes beautiful wood carved bowls. Congratulationsalso to Alex in the High school for attending his Grade 3 level drums exam this week. Grade 3 is a very high level in music, you’re awesome Alex! You’ll see Alex perform in our end of year concert.
Volunteers Lunch 1stDecember,12:30pm: All of our volunteers will be treated to a lunch on Thursday 1st December. Invitations will be out next week. If you have volunteered your time at our school or served on the executive we would love to treat you to a special lunch. Mark this date on your calendar.

End of year concert:
As a fundraiser for the school, we will be selling Tempeh burgers and Potato Curry with rice on the night. This was a great hit last year. Lynda, Andy, Darryl, Sarah and Jessica have volunteered to cook, however we will need people to help serve. We also need volunteers to help with set up and pack up of the hall. Please call Jessica in the office if you can help. We will also be having a stall selling Christmas hampers, drink bottles, Library bags and our shirts. We are asking for donations of small hampers, eg: tea and coffee, female pamper/male pamper, biscuits, etc, and also washed jars of all sizes, as the kids will be making lanterns to hang around. Please bring into the office.

Rainbow Room News

/ SWIMMING, SLIDING and CHILLING
Butterflies were in little tummies early on Tuesday morning before class, but coming back from swimming, when asked to “Cheer if you liked swimming?” there was a huge roar. Well done everyone who had their first lesson. Solomon did a very relaxed/chilled float. Puccini did very well at kicking his legs and everyone else was full of grins. The High School appeared to have fun playing ball games in the water.

Yak News

/ Yaks: We started writing persuasive letters this week. Students had no trouble getting into the swing of coming up with evidence to support their arguments in debates. Our year 7 girls who attended the One Million Women for Climate Action in Brisbane a few weeks ago are organising a clothes swap soon, watch out for your invitation. Clothes swapping is a great way to help reduce pollution on this planet from the production and transportation of new clothing all around the world. Clothes swapping saves you money too!

High School News

/ Scientists shine and slime:
Budding scientists were discovering micro worlds this week in pond scum thanks to NHS lending us a very good microscope & some gear. They intend to give us their old yet “WORKING” spare microscopes and stains so we may observe more microbes. Technology was used on the interactive board as we tried to identify life slurping around in the pond scum. Tate found mini molluscs, and Emily and Ifound Euglena with a little flagella.

A new science kit has arrived, so watch out for some serious slime time this coming week. They may bring it home. I will be running science hands –on- fun classes for all levels: Rainbow, Yaks and HS.
We need some RECYCLED or donated items please:
  • Clean 2 L soft drink bottles and lids –lots of please
  • 1 clear plastic bottle per child (maximum volume 750 mL – fruit juice bottles are ideal)–
  • Flexible tape Measure or string (similarly used for sewing)
  • Clean Bucket or 2
  • Wooden spoons
  • Measuring jugs
  • sieve or open weave cloth (e.g. Chux)
  • Plastic cups
Thanks Melissa –the mad scientist
