Welcome: Pam (special welcome to next years co-presidents)
Secretary Report: January 4, 2017meeting minutes were presented and approved.
Presidents Report: We received a Thank you note for the PTC Lunch. Amy and support team did a great job in keeping the cost low while providing a tasty lunch.
For the benefit of our upcoming board, we discussed our method of communicating with parents... PTSA no longer uses our gmail account for this purpose. We feel the most effective way to reach everyone is to have the Administration send out announcements using their updated and current email addresses. Therefore no one is getting missed. We are also include info on the web page. PTSA has our own info under the Community tab. Sam Puish manages the site.
We have also tried Vertical Response and Survey Monkey. The most effective communication to get people to help (volunteers) has been word of mouth.
We need to have a Quorum to vote for the incoming Board of Directors. We have moved the voting to next month’s meeting.
Commitment for next year’s 2017-2018 B.O.D.
Co-Presidents Sherri Casto and Lori Anderson
Co-Presidents Elect Holly Judkins and Theresa Walker
Treasurer - Brandi Thomas, Secretary - Kay Esplin
The American’s Womens class is going to see Hidden Figures and we will be providing a treat for them. 2/21/2017.
District PTA “Around the World” event at Jordan High in April is supposed to be about Diversity and Inclusion. We are hoping our spot could be manned by one or more of Brighton’svarious clubs. They could have a craft, food or singing/ dancing performance at/near the BHS table.
Keith Hawkins did a great job presenting the assembly. The students really liked him. We feel the administration could get better attendance at evening assemblies (for parents and students) if advertising happened further in advance and more frequently (at least 3 times). Another way to increase attendance might be to start at 7pm as opposed to 6:30pm. It’s a shame for parents to miss these worthwhile assemblies; especially if presenters are flying in from around the country. While receiving ARC credit for attending is one way to encourage attendance; it is also putting somewhat of a negative spin on the evening. Parents and students tend to think if tardies and absences aren’t a problem there’s no reason to attend. If there is a way to increase attendance in a more positive way, ex: “Sure fire ways to better communicate with your teen”, special drawingsetc… the PTSA board is highly in favor of this. We would like to have more communication about this idea with the administration.
If we are unable to meet with Charisse/Kelli during board meetings and SCC meetings, we may want to schedule a separate meeting to go over various items. SCC meetings are held 2nd Wednesday of the month at 15:15/3:15pm in the Library. Jenn Searle and Kim Steenblik are members of the SCC and are therefore good resourcesbetween the two committees.
We need to have every aspect of PTSA represented at our monthly meeting. Pam will talk to Charisse about this. We haven’t had available teacher or student representatives this year. Wesuggest there be backup people ready to attend if the primary people are unable to come to the meetings. Student reps do not need to be SBOs.
One area high school signs people up for PTSA at a beginning of year stomp sponsored by PTSA. Part of fee for entry would go to the PTSA. We could look into something like this.
Job Shadow Day was good. The kids spent 1-3 hours shadowing with a business and then the luncheon was held with a speaker. It’s unfortunate that the intended key-note speaker was not there at the luncheon. A suggestion from a sponsor was that maybe we should hold this luncheon at a High School Level instead of the District Level so the participants would be meeting with kids they are more familiar with and it could be a roundtable type of discussion. How do they choose the kids that get to participate? We would like this to be more widely advertised and available to more students. We expressed our support for anything which encourages students to explore possible work options. We are unanimously supportive of the Career Fair being a yearly event. Superintendent Briscoe has expressed this same type of sentiment on many occasions. We are in favor of adding another person to work with Eileen, the work based learning coordinator, if necessary.
PTA Day at the Capitol Building- There were 13 students scheduled to attend on Feb 1! Troi described attending past conferences. There are different representatives in attendance during this special day at the State at the Capitol. They separate the Adults and Students and they are taken on tours through all rooms. They hold a mock debate with the Speaker of the House going through the process of passing bills. IE : Cellular phones in the class rooms. They will divide the students into groups with one group representing the affirmative and the negative. February 22, 2017
Teacher Appreciation Mikki Barton and Group. Finding out he exact dates. Pam will follow up.
E-Cigarette/Vape- Poster was made and vandalized. It is on video tape and Kelli will be able to find out who it was. Vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking and that is the way it is being portrayed to the consumers, youth/adults. We are having a representative that will be here for PTC, Michael Siler, who will give some facts. He is proposed a bill about taxing e-cigs the same as tobacco products. At this time it is not regulated. We need to be proactive and not reactive to this growing problem for our children. Corner Canyon has seen a huge problem with vaping and there have several students that have gotten involved that are against vaping. Davis has a program called S.A.V.E which is comprised of students that are against vaping and E-Cigarette use.
Reflections- no one is moving on to region from Brighton.
Treasurer Report: We are on track. We need to talk about the Budget for the next school year in the Spring with the existing BOD and new BOD in attendance. They will need to plan to speak at the Freshman Orientation and have the Proposed Budget and Signup sheet.
We received sales tax refund check. Student Fund had an expense of $400.00 for fundraiser, Hope Squad $27.00, PTC Lunch $400.00.
We talked about where the Income comes from. The PTSA gets $2.00 of the $7.00 membership fee, 100% of all donations goes to the PTSA. We currently have 513 members.
Health and Safety Report: Hope Squad has a meeting this week. They have an activity of “Scattering Sunshine” during lunch. They created a video they will find out if this has been shown to the Student body. They are holding bi-weekly meetings and trainings.

Thought:
Three stone masons in the Middle Ages were hard at work when a visitor came along and asked them what they were doing. The first stone mason was hard at work, sweat beading his brow. “I am cutting this stone,” he grumbled. The second stone mason, though less distraught, responded with a deep sigh, “I’m building a parapet.” The third stone mason replied with a radiant face, “I am building a beautiful cathedral that will glorify God for centuries to come.”
These three stone masons had different visions. Two had vision of ending the job and going home. The other one had a heavenly vision. What is yours today? Set your eyes on things above.
**Remember that our vision/focus as the PTSA is that we are here for our Students or our Children!!**
Have the Vision the bigger picture.
