Guests Whit Menefee, Doady Didawick, David Nichols, Bob Holton 4

Rotary Minute: Peggy Duhamel gave us information about the visiting GSE team’s home country of Brazil. It is the fifth-largest country in the world and home to 186 million people. Johnna McFarland told us some about Janice Rodriguez, whom she and her husband Paul will host when the team arrives in March.

Program: Bob Holton, assisted by David Nichols, gave a presentation on political leadership and how it has changed over recent decades. Citing Abraham Lincoln as an example, Bob contrasted past leaders’ willingness to do what they believed to be right, even if that meant going against popular opinion, with leaders today who seem to have the ability to lead but not the willingness to do so because they are too swayed by the views of the majority. He thinks the rise of political parties and special interest groups, the influence of money in politics, and changing public expectations about what government should do and how it should work have led to a situation in which outside groups, not elected officials, make policy.
