Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer

Welcome to Basketball Camp

  • Pay attention to detail: Personal responsibility and accountability are expectations at basketball camp. This means you stay with your group, pay attention to instructions, and be ready to act.
  • The ability to listen attentively and focus on instruction is expected from all campers of all ages.
  • Listening skills & eye contact
  • Anticipate what the coach will say. Guess what is coming next. Then listen intently to see if you were right.
  • Listen to what your coaches tell you & watch the demonstrations by the high school & college players. Be ready to try the drills when you get the chance.
  • Be alert & ready to do what you are asked. This way less time is wasted and you will have more time to play basketball.
  • If you listen & try new things, you have the opportunity to learn and grow as a player. The key to success however, is to work on your own when you leave camp. This is how you become a better basketball player.

Monday Morning Stations

  • Ball handling with 1 ball with Coach TJ Driscoll
  • Players will practice ball handling in a stationary position with right and left hand
  • Ankle, waist, and shoulder height dribbles
  • In and out move
  • Crossover
  • Rolling ball front to back on the side of their body
  • Players need to work on keeping their head up to see the floor
  • V – Cut Shooting with Coach Dan Banz
  • To set up to this drill you need two lines on each wing two balls in each line first player in one of the lines does not have a ball.
  • The player without the ball will make a v-cut by going down to the block and plant on one foot and pop back up to the elbow.
  • Once they are at the elbow they will receive a pass from the opposite elbow for a catch and shoot.
  • The shooter gets their own rebound and switches lines passing the ball to the next player in the new line without a ball.
  • The passer will then make a v-cut for a catch and shoot and the drill continues
  • Panther Shooting with Coach Addison Rielly
  • Two teams shoot from the elbow first to a certain makes wins; played at the end of camp daily
  • Give and Go Lay-ups with Coach Megan O’Hara
  • Players had two lines at each wing like in V-Cut Shooting
  • There will be two or three in one line
  • The line with other the ball will have the first player flash to the elbow with their hands ready to receive the pass
  • The player with the ball will pass to the flashing player and move towards them as if they were going to receive the ball back
  • That player will then plant their foot that is further from the basket and cut back door
  • The player with the ball will deliver a bounce pass for a lay-up
  • The drill was done on both sides so players worked on their right and left handed lay-ups
  • Attack the Basket with Coach Sterling White
  • Players will start at half court and dribble in to the 3 point line
  • At the 3 point line they will make a dribble move and attack the basket
  • The player will want to change speed and direction with the dribble move as to get their defender out of position and beat them to the basket.
  • Friar Drill with Coach Alden Christensen

  • Half Court Friar Drill
  • 2 Ball Shooting with Coach Mitchell D’Elia
  • Two lines start under the basket where the lane line meets the baseline.
  • One line has the ball in the front of the line the other has it with the second player.
  • The first player runs to the block and across the lane as if the block on the court is a screener.
  • They will make it across the lane and receive a pass for a lay-up from the opposite line.
  • As the player makes the pass they will run behind the shooter in the same fashion to the other side for a lay-up.
  • The rebounder gives the ball to the opposite line they came from and goes to the back of the line.
  • Set a goal at each spot to make then take a step back to continue, the hash marks on the lane, the elbows, and three point line are good indicators in which you catch and shoot from.
  • Continue to step back as you reach your goal. You can add onto the end of the drill with pump fakes and get to the rim for a lay-up, jab and go for a lay-up, or rip through and go for a lay-up with different finishes like a power lay-up, one foot right and left lay-ups, inside hand lay-up or reverse lay-ups
  • Spin Out, Pivot, Shot with Coach Tony Calorusso
  • Players start under the basket with a ball
  • They will spin it out to around the elbow area
  • They will jump stop when catching the ball so they do not establish a pivot foot on the landing
  • The players will first pivot to the inside for a jumper
  • Players will then pivot inside shot fake and attack the basket
  • Players will do the same thing pivoting to the outside

Monday Morning’s Contest Contest is 1 on 1

  • The 1 on 1 contest helps us create even teams for fair and competitive games
  • Offensive Teaching points
  • Be in triple-threat position ready to drive or shoot. Use a shot fake or jab step to try and get the defense off balance or out of good position. As often as you can, drive the ball to the basket and get a close to the rim as possible.
  • Use your jab step to help get an open shot. More often now, players are being taught to jab directly at the defender, directly between their legs to illicit a reaction from the defense.
  • Jab step then drive to the basket – {JAB & GO}
  • Jab step to back your defender off then shoot your jump shot - {JAB & JUMPER}
  • Jab step then step across and go to the basket –{JAB & CROSS}

Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day
Get Back Transition Drill

Players divide into two teams. Black team starts with a rebounder (1), a defender (5), an outlet player (2), an attacking guard (3) and a player at half court ready to transition (4). The red team starts with a defender (x1), a trailing defender (x2), an outlet player (x4), and attacking guard (x5) and a player at half court ready to transition (x3) in a two on one situation.
Player 1 will outlet the basketball to player 2 who will advance the ball to player 3 without a dribble. Player 3 will attack player x1 with player 4 for a 2 on 1. Player (x2) will sprint back to help defend.
One shot only in the drill. The defensive rebounder will outlet the ball then follow to the line. The other defender will stay on defense again. The offensive player that shoots will sprint back on defense. The other offensive player assumes the position at half court. The drill continues to run with an outlet pass and advance pass and attack.

Monday Afternoon’s Contest X - Out

  • This contest improves a players pivoting, ability to push the ball out, and finishing at the rim with a lay-up
  • The player will start on one of the two elbows
  • The player has 45 seconds to make as many lay-ups as possible, make or miss they will gather their rebound and dribble to the opposite elbow then pivot and go back to the basket to attempt another lay-up
  • Pro Contest 2 Ball X – Out
  • Same drill however the player must dribble two basketballs to the elbow and in for the lay-up

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016

Tuesday Morning’s Contest is the Mikan Drill

  • The Mikan Drill is named after NBA great – George Mikan who was a Hall of Fame pro player in the 1940’s & 1950’s. George excelled at left hand & right hand baby hook shots around the basket.
  • The modern version of the Mikan Drill features continuous righty & lefty lay-ups. Players must quickly move and get a good angle so that they may bank the ball in high & soft off the square.
  • Make or miss, players rebound the shot and step through to the other side.
  • Again, get a good angle so that you are not attempting a shot from directly under the rim.
  • In the contest, players strive to score as many lay-ups as possible in a 30 or 45 seconds

Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer

  • Free Throw Fast Break
  • Set up as if the defending team in a free throw situation
  • Player top of key (1) – On the missed shot will run to the sideline getting their back to the sideline so they can see the floor when they catch the pass
  • Players on the lane (2) and (3) will loop to the outside staying close to the sidelines as in the previous drill
  • Player 4 will sprint the court directly to the rim
  • Player 5 will rebound and trail the play
  • Player one has multiple options kick it up to 2 or 3 for lay-ups or catches on the wing
  • If 2 or 3 catch on the wing they can look for an entry pass to player 4 running the court or take a jumper on the wing
  • They can also wait for the trailing player 5 for a lay-up
  • Player 1 can attack with a speed dribble into the front court
  • If they choose this option they can entry pass to the 4
  • Player 1 can kick it to 2 or 3 on the wing or streaking in for a lay-up
  • Or they can wait for player 5 trailing the play diving to the basket

Coach Justin Matisak’s Drill of the Day
Iowa State Speed Transition Drill
as seen here:
This Drill works on outlet passing, running the floor, and finishing at the rim. We set a lower goal for our campers than in the video. Iowa State has been a very successful college program over the last half decade with Coach Fred Hoiberg now coaching the Chicago Bulls.

Tuesday Afternoon’s Contest is Partner Hot Shot

  • In hot shot, players have 45 seconds to make as many shots as possible from different locations on the floor
  • One camper will shoot and get their own rebound
  • They will then pass to their teammate for a shot
  • Each location is worth a different value
  • Block is worth 2, elbow 3, foul shot 4, and three pointer with 5
  • Players must shoot one shot from each block, one from each elbow, a foul shot, and a three before they can move around freely
  • They can not shoot the same point value shot twice in a row
  • The partners will report their score to the coach and the highest tandems will advance to the finals on Friday.

Bridgewater-Raritan Varsity Head Coach: Gene McAteer and Junior Varity Coach Steve Kline

  • 2 on 1
  • Offensive Focus
  • Spacing the floor
  • Attack the defender, make them make a decision as whom to guard
  • Look to score, don’t pass for no reason
  • You can’t pass 3 or 4 times, at that point the defense will be back already
  • Make quick decisions
  • Finish at the rim
  • Defensive Focus
  • Get back and protect the rim
  • Play out from under the rim, don’t try to pick up at the foul line it will lead to a lay-up
  • Jab at the offensive, try to make them pick the ball up
  • Get them to settle for a jump shot and box out

Wednesday’s Teaching Stations

3 Line Passing into a 2 on 1 with Coach Mitchell D’Elia

Drill starts with 3 lines on the baseline one under the basket the other two where the three point line meets the baseline. The player in the middle has a ball and will pass back and forth to each wing player as they make their way up the floor. Once they reach half court and the ball is in one of the wing players hands the two outside players will attack the middle player in a 2 on 1 scenario. The players will play until the offense scores or the defense gets a rebound

Ball Handling on the Move with Coach Megan O’Hara

Players will work on their ball handling as a group. There will be a cone half way across the court in front of each line. Players will line up on the sideline and will first dribble full speed with their right hand up and back then hand off to their partner to go. Next they will speed dribble up and back with their left hand. Moving on players will now perform a series of dribble moves at the cone at center court, players need to focus on changing speed and direction to make their dribble move effective. Players will speed dribble to the cone at center court and perform a crossover dribble get to the other sideline then back performing a crossover again. Following the crossover players will work on their between the legs dribble, the between the legs dribble allows players to protect the ball with their body. Following the between the legs dribble players will do a behind the back dribble at the cone. Another move to work on is a back dribble to a crossover, players will speed dribble to the cone the take two dribbles back protecting the ball with their body, then crossover and explode passed the cone. Other dribble moves to practice not included during ball handling session. Spin move, it is important to keep your hand on top of the ball, young players tend to put their hands under the ball resulting in a carry. Players can work on a hesitation dribble, when approaching the cone players will slow and stutter step to get the defender off balance then explode around the defender, perform this with their left and right hands. Another dribble move is an in-and-out dribble up and back with their right hand then with their left hand. Not all ball handling drills done in the station due to time constraints, but all moves should be practiced by players on a regular basis

Star Passing with Coach Steelo “The G.O.A.T” White

Player 1 starts with ball at the right block. Player 2 is at the three point line between the wing and top of the key. Player 3 is in the corner opposite player 2. Player 4 is in opposite corner as player 3. Player 5 is in a similar position as player 2 on other wing. There will be a line under the basket behind player one. Player 1 passes to player 2 then follows their pass to the right. Player 2 passes to player 3 then follows their pass to the right. Player 3 passes to player 4 and follows to the right. Player 5 cuts the basket as player 4 throws a bounce pass for a lay-up. Players must meet the pass not just stand and wait for it. After the lay-up is made or missed the next player gets the ball before it hits the ground and starts immediately.

Rebounding With Coach Addison Reilly

Players line up in a free throw situation. There is 1 offensive player and 1 defensive player on each side of the lane. Coach misses the shot the defense will box out and go after the ball. If the offense gets the ball the defensive play will do push-ups

Cougar Shooting with Coach Dan Banz

Players line up at the baseline directly under the basket. Every player has a basketball except the first player. The first player will run out to a spot on the floor and turn having there hands up ready for a pass. They will catch and shoot and get their own rebound and bring it to the back of the line. The passer will then sprint to a spot for a catch and shoot. The drill continues for a set time or until the players make a certain amount of shots. Add one dribble pull-ups to the drill to continue to work on different aspects of the game

V-Cut Shooting Attacking the Basket with Coach Mark Beida

To set up to this drill you need two lines on each wing two balls in each line first player in one of the lines does not have a ball. The player without the ball will make a v-cut by going down to the block and plant on one foot and pop back up to the elbow. Once they are at the elbow they will receive a pass from the opposite elbow for a catch and shoot. The shooter gets their own rebound and switches lines passing the ball to the next player in the new line without a ball. The passer will then make a v-cut for a catch, rip through, and then one dribble to attack the rim.

Argentina Passing Drill with Coach TJ Driscoll

Put a player in each corner of the court, a player on both sidelines positioned at center court, and to right under the basket on the baseline. The two balls start with two players standing opposite each other. The pass the ball to the person to the right of them and then exchanges places with the player opposite of them…run! The ball continues around the court after each player passes he runs to the opposite spot i.e. - one center court sideline to the other. Make players stop in the middle of the drill and switch direction the ball is passed or the type of pass
