Introduction/Context / This lesson will instruct the student on how to inspect and test hand brake (trailer) control valve, lines, fittings, and mountings, and repair or replace as needed. Knowledge of these techniques and the skills required to correct problems associated with this task are necessary for a student to acquire if they wish to compete for high paying, high skilled jobs in a Diesel Repair Facility. Entry level technicians need to be able to perform this task to 100% accuracy. Incorrectly performing this task can lead to an automobile accident or create customer satisfaction issues.

Task
Inspect and test hand brake (trailer) control valve, lines, fittings, and mountings; repair or replace as needed.
Objective
Given the proper tools and instruction, the student will be able to inspect and test hand brake (trailer) control valve, lines, fittings, and mountings, repair or replace as needed, and pass a written test covering the task with 100% accuracy.

Tell students that one of these double- check valves is combined with the stoplight switch and mounted on the tractor protection valve. Explain that if air pressure is applied to both supply ports on these double-check valves, the check valve will allow airflow from the highest pressure source. If the trailer control valve is applied by itself, the double-check valves prevent air pressure from being supplied to the front and rear axle brakes on the tractor. Therefore, when the trailer control valve is applied, only the trailer brakes should operate. Let them know that if there is a loss of primary or secondary air supply on the tractor, the service brakes are still operational on the trailer.
Inform students that the trailer control valve is operated by the driver to apply the trailer brakes. When the trailer control valve is operated by the driver, air pressure is supplied from this Valve to the control port on the trailer relay valve. The trailer relay valve then opens and supplies trailer reservoir air pressure to the trailer brake chambers.
Tell students that trailer control valves can be tested with an accurate air pressure gauge. Faulty valves can be rebuilt with a service kit when available. Often, however, tell students that they will simply be replaced with a complete new valve. Explain that the trailer is supplied with air by means of air hoses. Service and trailer supply air is plumbed to a tractor protection valve. This air is transferred to the trailer by couplers known as gladhands.
Instruct students that gladhands enable easy coupling between the tractor air supply and controls and the trailer pneumatic circuit. Gladhand seals are usually manufactured from rubber. They are retained in an annular groove in the gladhand and are easily replaced when they fail.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT:(Assess student progress with performance criteria.)
IMPACT--Reflection/Analysis of Teaching and Learning: (How did students’ progress in relation to the state objectives? Was the instruction successful? Analyze samples of student work particularly that which is unsatisfactory, for the purpose of planning further instruction.)
REFINEMENT--Lesson Extension and Follow-up: (To be filled in as the lesson is modified during initial planning and/or during the teaching learning process.)
