PHILOSOPHY ANDCRITERIAFORASSOCIATEDEGREEANDGENERALEDUCATION

Coursesthataredesignatedtofulfillthegeneraleducationanddepthrequirements shall meet the following philosophy. Major requirements educate students inan area of specialization, while breadth requirements help them develop the capacity for independent judgment.

General education breadthrequirements emphasize democratic concepts based on the value and dignity of each individual,thushelpingstudents prepare to undertake the responsibilities of citizenship and to participate knowledgeably in the varied experiences of life.

Webelieveinthevitalimportance of major requirements to educate students in the area of specialization and in breadth requirements to help them develop the capacity for independent judgment.

We also believe that the generalGeneraleducationbreadthrequirementsareofvital importance in the personal, social, andvocational/professional life of each student:

1.In personal development, breadth requirements help students develop self- awareness, thus increasing understanding of personal potentialities and limitations.

2. In social relationships and in the life of society, breadth requirements help students communicate more effectively,promote better understanding of the communications of others and help developawarenessofsocietalrelationships.

3.In professional development,thebreadthrequirements help students become more effective persons in the workplacethroughmoreeffectiveproductive communication with fellow workers and through a better understanding of the relationship between the job at hand and the larger world into which it fits.

General education breadth requirements will help students by:

1. Exposing them to the major disciplines of accumulated knowledge

2. Stimulating curiosity about their surroundings

3. Evaluatingalternativessothat personal values can be formed

4. Developingeffective communication skills

5. Gaining a sense of self-worth

6. Learningtomakerationaldecisionsbasedontheutilizationofproblem-solving techniques

7.Questioning simple solutionsto complex problems and, if appropriate, seeking alternatives

The difference between theAA and AS Degrees: Students atCollege of the Sequoias who complete the appropriate requirements may earn either an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree. Both degrees represent significant levelsof achievement and may be used by students who plan to start their career immediately after graduating or, with proper planning and courseselection, by those who plan to transfer to a four- year university.

Associate of Arts (AA) degree isgranted to students majoring in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and similar areas.

AssociateofScience(AS) degreeisgrantedtostudentsmajoringinagriculture, engineering, technology, the sciences, and related programs.

The Superintendent/President shall establish procedures to assure that courses used to meet general education and associatedegreerequirements meet the standards in this policy. The proceduresshall provide for appropriate Academic Senate involvement.
