“Bowl of Hygeia”

Award Presentation

New Mexico

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. It is an honor for me to be here today at the NMPhA 2017 88th Annual Convention to present the next award to a very deserving recipient.

Optional: The “Bowl of Hygeia” is the most widely recognized international symbol of pharmacy and derives from Greek mythology. Hygeia was the daughter and assistant of Es-Kah-Lay-Pi-Ous, the God of Medicine and Healing. Her classical symbol was a bowl containing a medicinal potion, with the serpent of wisdom (or guardianship) partaking of it. This is the same serpent of wisdom that appears on the caduceus, which is the symbol of medicine.

The “Bowl of Hygeia” Award is presented annually by participating pharmacy associations in each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The recipients are selected by their respective associations for their outstanding record of community service. The Bowl of Hygeia award is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations.

To honor all those who have gone before, I would like to ask all previous recipients of the “Bowl of Hygeia” Award who are present today to stand and be recognized.

Today’s Bowl of Hygeia Winner will receive a plaque honoring him for winning this award. The recipient will also receive a lapel pin that will identify him as a member of a group of outstanding pharmacists, now numbering over 2,500. These pharmacists have distinguished themselves through their actions. Today, we honor a Clovis, New Mexico, pharmacist in recognition of his service to the community and to the profession.

The 2017 Bowl of Hygeia recipient…

Has devoted an incredible amount of energy, time and passion to volunteer

efforts that better our community locally and regionally. He believes that a

responsible and active member of any society will not only help to maintain

their community, but will also work to grow and improve it. This year's

recipient volunteered his time as a youth leader at church and as a youth

basketball coach, and he served as a deacon at Central Baptist Church in Clovis.

He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce and it was his involvement

in the Chamber that spurred his interest in local politics. As a result, he was

first elected Commissioner in Clovis to District 1. Now, he is currently serving

as the Mayor of Clovis and has done so for almost 20 years! He has advocated

for new businesses and industries to come to the Clovis area and was a part of

the effort to keep Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis when it was put on the 2005

Base Realignment and Closure list (BRAC). A principal advocate for securing a

future sustainable water supply for the residents of Clovis and Eastern New

Mexico, he currently serves as the Chairman of the Ute Water Commission, is

past Chairman of the Eastern New Mexico Water Authority and a current

member of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority. He played an

integral part in bringing the 30,000 sq. foot Clovis Civic Center to the

community which has been tremendously successful and currently serves as

Chairman of the Public Works Committee addressing many infrastructure

matters for the community. He is also a graduate of Leadership New Mexico.

He has been the Chairman of the Ute Water Authority and a principal advocate

for securing a sustainable water supply to Clovis and surrounding communities.

His position as Mayor has taken him around the world to Singapore as a

representative of Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base, and to Washington, D.C.

many times as an advocate for the interests of Clovis and Eastern New Mexico.

He knows what it means to work hard, he is compassionate when listening to

patient concerns, and provides a trustworthy and quality service to customers.

He has provided, and continues to provide, this same level of care, compassion

and approachability in his civic service roles which makes him a much deserved

recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to share in recognizing the accomplishments of a deserving recipient and one who epitomizes the principles of community service for which this award was

developed. Please welcome to the podium and join me in congratulating the newest member of New Mexico Pharmacists Association’s Bowl of Hygeia Award Recipient “family”, David Lansford.
