From the President's Pen
Posted by Yvette Reade on Aug 21, 2014
We welcomed back Rob McLennan as our Sergeant-at-Arms after a two weekabsence due to business commitments - but the news got even better when Rob announced that his and Sally's Snooze franchise won the "Retailer of the Year" award for the second year running. Congratulations Rob and Sally.
We also welcomed Chris back after his holidays and said farewell to David Riggall who is off to Europe for a five week holiday.
It was with great regret that I read out Feisar Joya's resignation letter which said"Dear Yvette, fellow Rotarians, It is with great regret that I notify you on my resignation from the club. As you know, I am a very passionate individual that gives 100% into any task that I undertake; as such, my deep involvement with the Colombian project which was driven with heart and soul from the beginning. Over the past years my professional activities have taken a toll on my spare time; however, I haven’t allowed it to have an effect on my family time so far. My role with Motorola Solutions changed earlier last year when I was promoted and I am happy to report that it has happened once again last month. The outcome to this latest promotion is a requirement for extra travel (40 to 50% of my time) as a result of an expanded area of responsibility and teams under my leadership. Professionally I hope you understand that this is the time in which I must enjoy the opportunity that this organization, its leaders and our customers are providing me with. I am loving to see how everything comes together and I MUST give a big Thank You to Don Tindale for his ongoing support and for being my professional mentor. I hope to continue supporting the club fundraising activities such the collection of cans plus any other activity in which we can join you. You all have been like a family to me, Marcela, Ricardo and Bella (the Schnauzer). We are going to miss you but hope that in the spirit of friendship we can keep in touch. Blessing and best wishes to you and your families, Hasta la vista, Feisar
Feisar, and Marcela- as Friends of Rotary - will of coursecontinue receiving our weekly newsletters andare welcome to attend any social event or meeting that we hold. Feisar, many thanks for your input over the past seven years especially in the field of International Service and the Colombian Education Scholarships Program that you helped to develop. We hope you are able to rejoin Rotary in the future.
Calperum Station - it's not too late to let Rohan know if you'd like to do your bit for the environment and join us for interesting project work, camaraderie, good wines, great food and lovely nights sitting around a bonfire at Calperum Station just north of Renmark. We have six voyagers coming along so far and have room for more in Rotary House's accommodation. Some are arriving on Friday afternoon/evening 29 August and a couple are coming up early on Saturday 30 August. We all leave on Sunday around lunchtime. This is a great weekend to undertake tree planting, maintenance work, tree health data and GPS positioning - or whatever the staff of Calperum need us to perform. Details will be sent out by Rohan this week to all those interested in attending.
As DG John and Julie will be making their "official" visit to our Club on Thursday 11 September, can you please start asking your friends, family and neighbours if they have any shoes that can be donated to Soles4Souls Australia. Please remember that each PAIR of shoes must be accompanied by a gold coin donation to help pay for the transportation costs to Tanzania and other destinations - so don't forget to ask the shoe donor for their monetary donation as well. Julie has adopted S4S Australia as her Rotary charity to support during her year as DG's partner - or "First Lady" - as we used to be known! (Shoes with higher than 2 inch heels and Ugg Boots will not be accepted.)
In coming weeks, we have a great line-up of speakers including Rodney Fox (the shark expert) on Thursday 4 September. Don't forget to invite your friends and colleagues to hear this excellent speaker. Rodney will also be bringing along his new book which will be sold at just $25 a copy. More great speakers - including our own new member - have also been lined up in coming weeks.
Guest Speaker - Bashar Baghdadi "Refugee Situation in the Middle East
Bashar Baghdadi was born as a Jordanian Muslim Arab but he attended a Catholic Cohesive School to learn about the culture and heritage of his mother. As a 16yo he was happy to be given a job as a full-time volunteer in conflict resolution! He then went on to advanced management, and was a founding member of a local Rotaract Club in Jordan.
Bashar has spent his life in the humanitarian field and although Jordan is a relatively safe country, 26% of its population is made up of refugees seeking sanctuary from the nearby countries of the Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Libya. Refugees into Jordan are afforded three days of no questions - they are just provided with the basic living requirements of food, shelter and safety. Jordan has been a safe refuge since 1948 and its camps hold over 300,000 refugees.
Bashar has worked a great deal in Syria where the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has supplied hundreds if not thousands of tents in "tent cities" to hold the rapidly expanding need for humanitarian aid. These tent cities provides a central food canteen, schools for the children with Syrian teachers, butchers, mini markets, barbers - the lot - as the camps aim to engender functioning effective human beings.
Bashar's job was to ensure the fluctuating numbers of refugees in these various camps scattered across Syria had enough resources - food, electricity, provisions, water etc - to nourish the 15,00-23,000 refugees who ebbed and flowed through the camps. When he was asked to head up to one of the northern Syrian camps, he was made to assume a different name, different birth date, and different background due to the threat of violence or death within the camp.
Syrian refugees were sometimes transferred to Turkish camps because this hot summer desert area suffers bleak icy weather in winter.
Bashar is attempting to support a Rotary Action Group for Peace (started by a Jewish person overseas that now has 2000 members) that he is trying to broaden into a "Peace Day" in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane etc where an apple for Peace will be given at the event.
Bashar is taking a gap year in Australia from his work in the Middle East and attended the Sydney International Convention as well as touring around talking to Rotary Clubs.
Bashar's was a very enlightening talk.

Important dates coming up:
·  Friday 29 to Sunday 31 August: Great news - we get to return to Calperum Station near Renmark to not only help this lovely outback property to protect its vulnerable ecology - but we also get to sample a few reds and great food (that we take ourselves) to the working bee. It is a great "escape to the country" and loved by all who have attended in the past. We'll see whether Jack and Terry are going to bring their yabbying nets to scare up supper, or whether Yvette can once again make damper in the outside fire coals.
·  10-13 September: Royal Adelaide Show's Yellow Brick Road - volunteers needed to staff the Dairy Pavilion (out of the weather) in three hourly shifts. See Julie to choose a time that suits you.
·  Scout's Gang Show - featuring Ray Cullen - Kintore Theatre, city from 23-27 September. An evening will be chosen and a groups for dinner & show will be arranged.
·  26-29 March: Port Lincoln Conference - all hands needed on deck to help DG John & Julie to provided a smooth-running District Conference. Go online at www.rotary9500in2015.com.au to register.
