BOSTON

Boston is a diverse modern city of neighborhoods covering a total area of 89.13 square miles and land area of 48.42 square miles. It is located in Eastern Massachusetts, 106 miles south of Portland, Maine; 44 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island; 93 miles northeast of Hartford, Connecticut; and 218 miles northeast of New York City.

Boston is New England’s leading port; a regional rail, bus, and truck terminal center; and an important air transporter center. It is the hub from which many highways extend to serve the cities/towns to the north, west, and south.

The Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development define the geographical borders of the city of Boston as[1]:

*The 4-year graduation cohort consists of students who were 1st time 9th graders four years prior to the year of graduation. It also includes students who transferred into BPS and excludes students who transferred out of BPS and deaths during the four-year period. The status is updated as of October 1 of the following school year. For example, the population for the Cohort 2010 includes students who were enrolled in BPS in grade 9 in the fall of 2006 plus transfers into BPS minus transfers out of BPS or deaths occurring through the end of SY2009-10. The status is updated as of October 1, 2010
