How to Make a Book Jacket:

***Your teacher will provide you with paper.****

  1. From the left side, measure in 2 1/2 inches, then 5 1/2 inches, then 5 1/2 inches, and then 2 1/2 inches.
  2. Lightly draw vertical lines at each spot you measured. Then the paper can be folded inward along the lines. Check with the diagram below.

Putting It All Together

Front Cover (2): On the front cover you need to include the title of the book, the author’s name, your name, the date and an interesting picture drawn by you. Cover should be colorful and appealing.

Back Cover (4): On the back cover write a summary of the events in the book. Remember, the summary states the facts, not what you thought about the book. It must include main events that occurred in the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story.

Spine (3): Use creative lettering to design a spine for your book jacket. Include the title of the book, the publishing company, and the author’s name.

Inside Front Flap (1): Write a detailed description of the main character of the book. Use the graphic organizer provided to help get you started.

Inside Back Flap (5): Write down the reasons why you liked the book. Try to sell others on reading this book.

Extra credit: Use the back of front and back cover to write a one sentence summary of each chapter. Label the chapters.
