Visual Art Course Outline 2016-2017

Course Objective

Students will look at and talk about major works/styles of art, as well as create their own pieces using the elements of art and principles of design. Students will study various artists, art styles, and cultures from around the world. Students will learn creative and critical thinking skills that will help them as students in the 21st century classroom.

Curriculum Guide

The art curriculum will encompass the following key concepts:

1st Nine Weeks

The first nine weeks will be an introduction to the elements of art.

2nd Nine Weeks

The second nine weeks will be a continued study of the elements of art and learning how they are incorporated into a successful work of art.

3rd Nine Weeks

The third nine weeks will use the understanding of the elements of art to introduce the principles of design.

4th Nine Weeks

The fourth nine weeks will be an opportunity to combine both the elements and principles and create a unique way to solve a visual problem.

Student Expectations

Participation:Class participation is necessary for good performance in this class. Students are expected to participate in all class activities to the best of their abilities. Promptness to class is also important.

Daily Tasks:

  • Students must come to class prepared with all necessary art supplies. (Always have a pencil!)
  • At the beginning of class, students should quietly begin their sketchbook assignment, and setup with their materials.
  • Students should remain on task and use their time wisely to complete projects on time.
  • Students should remain quiet and listen any time the teacher, or another student is speaking to the class.
  • Students should always keep their area clean as well as clean their area completely before they leave.

Classroom Expectations:

· Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself

· Participate in class and give your best effort on projects

Sketchbook: Each student will be required to keep a sketchbook, which will be used for various written assignments and individual sketches. Students will be responsible for having their sketchbook in art class each day as part of their daily grade.

How art is graded

Art is a graded subject. Students will be challenged not only in the making of their projects, but in the thinking and planning of their pieces as well. Each project is graded on a rubric, with clear objectives for each assignment. The students will practice and learn these objectives and then will use them in a piece of art. Students write the objectives for each project on the back of their piece so they clearly know what is expected from them. It is not about their talent, it is about their work ethic and participation in class. Talent will help with mastering the skills, but completing the project, challenging themselves, and good craftsmanship are just as important to their grade.

Assessment and Grading

Students will receive a grade daily for their sketchbook and participation in class. A lack of participation or poor effort will result in a loss of points on their daily grade, and may affect their final project. In addition, students will be graded on the progress of their current project. The Visual Arts Teachers will implement the following grading scale:

A = 100 – 9350%Finished Projects

B = 92 – 8530%Daily Work/Participation

C = 84 – 7520% Sketchbooks

D =74 – 70

F = Below 70

Conduct: Active participation in class activities and on-task behavior is essential for an effective learning environment. On-task behavior includes following classroom rules and daily procedures as well as using respectful manners. Students not meeting expectations will have consequences that will be documented on Minor Referrals, with 4 Minors becoming a Major Office Referral.

Make-Up Policy: Students will have makeup days each quarter where they will have a chance to makeup any missing or unfinished projects, and turn them in to be graded. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with and complete each project on time. Work not submitted on time will be considered LATE, and will not be allowed to be made up for full credit on make up days. After the makeup days, any missing work will become a “0”. If there are special circumstances, students will need to discuss this with their art teacher.

Homework Policy: Students are also responsible for submitting quality course work in a timely manner. Please refer to school Homework Policy. Normally, students will not receive homework in art, but when students are behind on a project they are allowed to take the project home as long as they have permission from the teacher.

Art Supply List: We will purchase the majority of the supplies, but students should bring:

-Pencils

-Eraser (pink pearl, art gum)

-$10 art fee (all classes) – This will cover poster board, sharpeners, colored pencils, markers, sharpies, watercolor paint, tempera paint, oil pastels,chalk pastels, acrylic paint, sculpture materials, clay, canvases, scratchboard, and other materials throughout the year.
