Bolton Hill Tennis Ladder
Summer 2012
Rules
LADDER ADMINISTRATOR: Beth Nguyen,
ELIGIBILITY AND SEEDING
- Any member of Bolton Hill Swim and Tennis may participate in the BST Tennis Ladder.
- Players who wish to participate should send their name, phone numbers (home, work, and cell), and e-mail address to the ladder administrator, Beth Nguyen, at .
- New players may choose either to begin at the bottom of the ladder, or play in by challenging any player on the ladder ranked #4 or below. If the play-in challenge is won, the new player will be inserted at that spot. If the play-in challenge is lost, the new player will be placed at the bottom of the ladder. A play-in match must be played (cannot be won by default). New players are encouraged to consult with Yon, members of the tennis committee, and other club members to determine a suitable point at which to challenge in.
CHALLENGES
- Players must challenge the player directly above their position in order to move to a higher position. Players may not skip any positions in the challenge process. Challenges should be issued both by phone and by email.
- The higher-ranking player must accept all challenges within 7 days after the challenge is issued.
- If the higher-ranking player does not acknowledge or cannot accommodate the challenge within the 7-day period, the lower-ranking player may assume the higher position by notifying the ladder administrator (Beth Nguyen) and the higher-ranking player. The BST Tennis Committee must approve any exceptions to this rule.
- All challenges must be registered with Beth Nguyen as soon as a mutually agreed upon date is decided.
- Challenge matches may be scheduled for a 2-hour court reservation 2 days (48 hours) in advance of the match. Please notify the desk person that you are scheduling a ladder match when you reserve the court.
- If player C wishes to challenge player B and player B already has a challenge match scheduled with player A, then C’s challenge must be postponed until the result of the challenge match between A and B. Player C may then initiate another challenge to the loser of the match between A and B.
- Once a match has been completed, the loser cannot rechallenge the winner until at least 7 days have elapsed.
- Players winning 3 consecutive challenges are allowed a "free" challenge, where they can challenge a player of their choice (i.e., as high above them as they wish). If they win, they take that spot and everyone below that spot moves down. If they lose, they remain in their current spot and must continue challenging according to the regular procedure.
- The BST ladder will be updated on a weekly basis and published at the pool each Monday afternoon.
- Seeding of the end-of-summer BST Club Championships will take into account ladder rankings, but will ultimately be determined by the committee in consultation with the club pro, Yon Armstrong.
RULES OF PLAY
- Each player must bring a new can of balls with them to the challenge match. The winner of the match will receive the new can of balls.
- The player initiating the challenge will be responsible for reserving the court for the match.
- Play 2 out of 3 sets. If the set goes to 6-6, play a 7-point tiebreaker (first to win at least 7 points and lead by at least 2 points).
- If a match cannot be completed due to weather, the match must be completed within 5 days or the player who is leading at the time the match is suspended is considered the winner. If the match is tied at the point that play is suspended the challenger shall be considered the loser.
- Both players should report their scores to Beth Nguyen as soon as possible.
