Book Aid International’s vision is of vibrant libraries that inspirereaders and empower communities.

Our mission is to work in partnership with libraries in sub-Saharan Africa providing books, resources and training to support an environment in which reading for pleasure, study and lifelong learning can flourish.

In 2015 we provided 1.12 million books to 2,624 libraries in 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and a small programme in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, reaching an estimated 24,000,000 beneficiaries. We trained over 500 Librarians and Teacher Librarians.

The Major Donor programme has been in place since 2013. Book Aid International is now seeking to expand and develop our major donor fundraising to support ambitious growth in our programmes.

Book Aid International employs 22 staff, mostly based in its South London office and warehouse with one staff member based in Nairobi. We work with over 50 partners in sub-Saharan Africa to deliver our work.

Role

The Major Donor Manager will manage the Major Donor individual programme, supported by the Head of Fundraising & Development, the Director, senior staff members and the Trustee board as necessary, and with the assistance of the Fundraising Officer (one day p/week support time, with no line management responsibilities).

The Major Donor Manager is responsible for project managing an existing portfolio of c. 30 individuals, with an expectation that following the expansion of this role from part time to full time, a target of holding c.100 Major Donor relationships will be met over the next 2 years. The role will have responsibility for developing and carrying out a strategy of ambitious growth over the next three year strategic period by identifying and engaging new potential donors both externally and from our current database. There is a current income target of c. £80k with an expectation of growth to c. £200 - £220k in the next 3-year strategy period of 2017-2019.

The role is located in our offices in Camberwell, South London, and may include some short-term travel in our partner countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Responsibilities

Maintaining and developing our high value donor programme through:

  • Managing the existing programme of high value individual donors
  • Developing and delivering a strategy for increasing income in line with ambitious plans for growth over the next three-year strategic period
  • Work with the Head of Fundraising & Development and other senior staff and high level volunteers to develop in-country support networks in our key countries of operation
  • Managing our current cultivation event programmeto raise our profile and generate income
  • Work with the Individual Giving Manager to develop our mid-value programme
  • Coordinating the use and development of high profile supporters alongside the Head of Fundraising & Development and the Head of Communications
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of Fundraising & Communications

Educated to degree level or equivalent / Fundraising or marketing qualifications
Experience
Experience of raising large donations from individual or corporate donors OR experience working in a corporate marketing or CSR environment (particularly publishing) / PR or Events experience
Demonstrable experience in developing major gift programmes / Travel experience in developing countries
Knowledge
Knowledge of key issues in UK major giving environment / Understanding of international development issues
Existing contacts within the international philanthropic community
Understanding of the UK publishing industry
Skills and Abilities
Exceptional written and spoken communication skills / Good level of numeracy
