The Most Holy

Body and Blood of Christ

Genesis 14:18-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26;

Luke 9:11b-17 [169C]

“As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, ‘dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions, for we are in a deserted place here.’ He said to them, ‘Give them some food yourselves.’ They replied ‘five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for these people... ’”

How often the gospel of Luke shows compassion and concern. He paints a picture, including the time of day, the nature of the location and the needs of the people.

For Jesus it is an opportunity, not just to feed the multitude but to teach the apostles and subtly provide for something greater. The greater gift is the Eucharist when He feeds us with His Body and Blood. Paul speaks of the tradition he received, written even prior to the gospel stories of the Last Supper. He handed on to us what was given to Him, the story of the final gathering of Jesus with the apostles.

How important to take this event a step further. Jesus says to us ‘Give them some food yourselves.’ We might do that literally serving in a food pantry, providing monies for food banks, or taking a meal to someone who is homebound or alone. We feed others with kindness and care, friendship and support, especially those who seem to be deserted or abandoned by others. The corporal works of mercy are signs that what happened there continues to occur today…

The passage concludes by saying: ‘they all ate and were satisfied.’ I am sure this refers to Jesus, the Twelve, the multitude, and the people the Lord wants us to serve.

We regret to inform you of the passing of one of St. Joseph's oldest parishioners, Anne (McCormack) Fennessy, who passed away on Thursday May 27, 2010 at the age of 98. Originally from Brooklyn, Anne had been very actively involved in the parish; according to one parishioner, she "read the beginning of Genesis at Easter Vigil better than anyone I've ever heard." Please keep Anne and her family in your prayers.
Also, remember Carmela De Lucia, mother of Fr. Vincent, in your prayers. She passed away on Wednesday, May 26.
The collection for May 30 was$5,497. Thank you.
Dear Parishioners,
The Academy of St. Joseph extends much gratitude to our parish community for their prayers throughout the year.
We congratulate all students who will graduate from Kindergarten, and ask God’s blessing on them as they continue their journey as students.
Special thanks to Fr. McGuire and all the priests of St Joseph’s for their spiritual leadership, prayers and support.

Principal

PLEASE REMEMBER OUR PARISH IN YOUR WILL

No matter what the size of your estate, if you want to provide for relatives, friends and our Parish you will need a WILL. If you die without one, you lose control of the disposition of your assets. The state law in which you reside will tell your family where your money and property goes.

Naming our Parish as a charitable beneficiary in your Will is simple. Through careful review of this alternative you may save further income and estate taxes. For further information, you and/or your attorney may contact
