Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales based in Cardiff is this year celebrating 25 years of providing specialist therapy to children in Wales who have cerebral palsy.

To mark this momentous occasion, the registered charity are this year making each of their annual fundraising events bigger and better than ever before, with some extra events added in to the mix to really mark such a special occasion.

One of their recent fundraising events on St David’s Day was an evening with Chris Coleman OBE, the Welsh football manager took part in a Q&A with guests, hosted by journalist and presenter Frances Donavan.

Cerebral palsy is the most common children’s disability in the world today, there are an estimated 1,800 children in Wales with cerebral palsy, of this number over 570 are registered with the charity. Cerebral palsy is a permanent disorder of posture and movement resulting from brain damage occurring in a baby or young child.

Bobath therapy is a framework for analysis and treatment, informed by up-to-date research and knowledge, assessing, analysing and providing appropriate treatment to individuals with cerebral palsy. The expertise of the three disciplines, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy are combined to help each child learn the skills they need to explore their world, communicate their needs, maximise their potential and so improve their quality of life.

Head of Fundraising, Gail Griffiths spoke of the charities delight at reaching this milestone:

“This year is particularly special to us at it marks how far the charity has come over the past 25 years. We hope to continue improving the quality of life for children in Wales with cerebral palsy for many, many more years to come.

“We would like to extend a huge thank you to the individuals and businesses that have supported us for over 25 years, their help and support has been invaluable to us and it is something that we are truly grateful of.”

The charity has recently launched its early intervention programme ‘Better Start, Better Future’ to provide specialist therapy to babies as soon as possible after birth, as research shows the earlier a child with cerebral palsy starts having therapy the better.

The charity is now in full preparation for their forthcoming ‘Touch of Silver’ Anniversary Ball at the City Hall on the 9th of June, along with several other fundraising events including A Question of Women at the Marriott Hotel Cardiff on the 5th May and a Golf Day held at the Celtic Manor on the 25th May.

Did you know that:

·  Cerebral palsy is the commonest disability in children in the world today.

·  Every six hours another child is born who will have cerebral palsy.

·  The incidence of cerebral palsy is not declining largely due to the number of babies who survive being born prematurely.

·  Any woman who is pregnant could have a child with cerebral palsy. You could have a child or grandchild with cerebral palsy.

·  Although the brain damage that occurs is permanent and there is no cure available Bobath therapy makes a positive difference to the life of every child who has cerebral palsy.

·  Every child who has cerebral palsy is affected differently therefore each one needs an individual assessment and therapy plan.

·  Cerebral palsy can affect movement, sensation, perception, cognition, communication and eating and drinking. In some children, all of these functions may be affected.
