PTA Meeting Minutes
April 10, 2018

Board members present: PTA Vice President Meg Power
PTA Secretary Leslie Hartman

  1. Call to order: Meg Power at 6:05
  2. Proposal to approve the February and March meeting minutes
  3. Cathy Durrette moved to approve the proposal.
  4. Diane Heipel seconded the motion.
  5. Motion passed; minutes approved.
  6. Vice President’s report:
  7. Penny Wars update: Maple house won and their prize will be a movie, popcorn and dress-down day on 4/27. Volunteers are needed to supervise the kids, serve popcorn, and clean up. Total raised by Penny Wars: $606.
  8. Blacktop re-painting (with Penny Wars funds): may need to take place after Outdoor Classroom project is completed because of heavy machinery treading on newly painted blacktop. Meeting attenders given opportunity to vote on their top 3 choices for blacktop designs.
  9. Walkway reconstruction project to get started next week and will take 3 days.
  10. Earth Day Extravaganza on 4/24 at 12:00pm will involve a parade around Forest Hill Park with large puppets (volunteers needed to hold puppets and pick them up from storage using a pick-up truck—sign-up genius coming) and an environmental fair at PHSSA.
  11. Drama production: “Big Bad Musical” junior cast (K-1st grade) auditions this Thursday at 6pm.
  12. Run for the Arts will take place on 5/4.
  13. River Romp will take place on 4/20.
  14. Kid Pan Alley performances will take place on 4/20 during the day and in the evening.
  15. Secretary’s report: The Giving Tree is live and offers parents and friends of PHSSA to support teachers by purchasing their requested items. Please take a leaf OR sign up online.
  16. Committee reports:
  17. Parental Involvement: Tiffany Townsend reported that notices will be going out soon to parents who are short on hours.
  18. Garden Committee: Garden work day coming up 4/28 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Dr. Atkinson encouraged all to come but if you can’t come that day, anytime can be spent weeding and raking.
  19. Events and Fundraising: if you ordered spirit wear, see Cathy Durrette.
  20. Hospitality: Diane Heipel reported that a sign-up genius will be coming for Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
  21. New Business:
  22. Nominating Committee: Cathy Durrette reported that there are 4 individuals running for the 4 board positions for next year. A vote will be held at next month’s meeting. An offer was extended to anyone else who wanted to run for these offices.
  23. Ashley Kenneth is running for President.
  24. Tiffany Townsend is running for Vice President.
  25. Elliot Jordan is running for Treasurer.
  26. Meg Power is running for Secretary.
  27. Vice Chair of PHSSA Board of Directors Tiffany Ford announced that there will be a yard sale on 5/5 (11:00am-3:00pm) to raise funds for the 3rd floor renovations. The board is seeking donation of items to sell and will also be offering tables for individual to rent to sell their own items.
  28. The next PHSSA board meeting will be held on 4/11 at 6pm and thereafter on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.
  29. Parent Karen Taylor announced that there will be a parents’ meeting with the parks and recreation department tomorrow at 9am at PHSSA to discuss concerns about after school programming and staff. Any concerned parent is invited to join the meeting.
  30. Questions were directed to Dr. Atkinson about security changes and improvements at RPS, specifically PHSSA. Dr. Atkinson reported that PHSSA has made changes to improve security:
  31. All traffic must come through the front door.
  32. There is a staff member monitoring the security cameras until 5:30pm when the building is closed.
  33. Parents are asked not to hold the door for anyone coming behind them into the building, but allow the front desk monitor to buzz everyone in separately.
  34. The meeting was adjourned at 6:41pm. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 8th at 6:00pm.
